The number 43 has a special meaning in NASCAR, and that's because it was the number of the "King" Richard Petty, who in his decorated career won 200 races and a total of 7 championships, a tie for the most number of overall victories ever in NASCAR history. Aric Almirola is the one who has inherited that number.
Starting in Kart racing at 8, Almirola had shown a rare knack for speed in a variety of races, and this had not gone unnoticed by the racing world. Starting from his selection for the driver development program of Joe Gibbs Racing, in 2008 he landed the major role of subdriver for Dale Earnhardt Jr. In 2010, he participated in the ferociously competitive Camping World Truck Series, and won 2 races. In the following year of 2011 he became 4th in the nationwide series rankings. With more experience now under his belt, Aric Almirola had definitely caught the attention of everyone as a promising young driver, and people wondered who he would race with when he reached the top level of NASCAR racing.
In 2012, he joined Richard Petty Motorsports, and started his long awaited full participation in the Sprint Cup Series. Aric Almirola became the driver of the legendary #43 car, and took the first pole position in his career in the 12th round at Charlotte. In the 35th round at Martinsville he conquered the flat and difficult short oval, crossing the line in 4th place, hinting to many fans of the coming of a new hero in NASCAR.

- For the Martinsville Chase/playoffs race (Goody's Headache Relief Shot 500), Almirola had his car renumbered to 41, to honor Maurice Petty's (brother of Richard Petty) induction into the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
