2002 was his first participation, and he surprised everyone by dominating the qualifying round of the famous Daytona 500. He maintained his strength through the season, taking 3 wins that year. This was the first time in history that a rookie in his debut year stood on top of the rankings even for a moment.
From his first year in which he made his presence known, he immediately became the top contender, and in 2006 he took his first series champion.
That was only the beginning. From 2007 the following year until 2010 was the age of Johnson. The 5 year consecutive win was a historic feat, bettering the 3 consecutive wins in a row attained by famed driver Cale Yarborough in the 70's.
In the 2011 season he dropped to 6th place, going under the top 5 ranking for the first time in a while, but in 2012 he fought strong for the championship until the very end, securing 2nd place overall. He again was in the top of the rankings mid way through the season in 2013, living up to his "Superman" nickname.
There is no doubt that the strength of Hendrick Motorsports harbouring famed crew chief Chad Knaus is a part of what made the consecutive wins possible. The ultimate tag team that rewrote NASCAR history in recent years, is an all rounder that can win at any track.

- With Johnson's Daytona 500 win in 2013, it is the only Daytona 500-winning NASCAR car to appear in the series; the 2010 and 2011 editions of the event were won by Jamie McMurray and Trevor Bayne, whose cars are not featured in the games.
