The third round of the 2022 Gran Turismo World Series aired on November 6 (for Manufacturers Cup) and November 13, 2022 (for Nations Cup) on Gran Turismo TV's YouTube channel, consisting of drivers and manufacturers who took part in the Showdown event, for purposes of the championship points battle leading into the World Finals. The events were to be originally aired on October 23 and 30, 2022, but were postponed three days before the original scheduled Manufacturer's broadcast (throughout the originally intended broadcast week, there were no promotions for the event).[1]

Like the first two rounds (and the 2020 and 2021 FIAGTC races), as the races were broadcasted as tape-delayed "premiere" (in which the videos are treated as a video upload, rather than an actual live stream), the races were played several weeks in advance, with players being subject into a non-disclosure agreement regarding the outcome of the races until the races have been aired.

This would be the last of pre-taped GTWS points races, as none were held for the 2023 season.

Manufacturers Cup[]

The Manufacturers Cup race aired on November 6, 2022, as a tape-delayed "premiere" on Gran Turismo TV's YouTube channel.

Entry List[]

The Manufacturers Cup race consists of the top 12 manufacturers in the Global Manufacturer Rankings of the 2022 Online Series Season 1 (with the partner manufacturers being granted "immunity" from failing to qualify), the same criteria as with the Showdown. The drivers are chosen from those who participated in the Showdown. The roster remained the same from round 2 for that reason, except Jaguar did not participate for undisclosed reasons. Additionally, because the race was taped before the release of update 1.25, the Nissan team continued to use the 2013-specification car instead of the new Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3 '18.

(P) indicates a partner manufacturer, which has a guaranteed entry regardless if they finished outside of the top 12 in the online series.

Race[]

After a rather mixed-up qualifying that saw championship contenders Subaru starting from last and Volkswagen take a surprise pole position, three of the four teams on the front two rows opted to start on Soft tires while the rest started on Mediums. Initially, Suzuki and Bonelli managed to pull away with Hafidi following some distance behind, but as they battled the Nissan driver managed to catch up - thus creating a three way battle where the lead changed constantly.

Further back, Kokubun pulled out a lead on the other Medium runners while the Mitsubishi of Mosso made a mistake that cost him his position in the top 5. This allowed a tight battle to develop in the midfield between himself and 4 other drivers: Mangano, Inostroza, Carrazza and Romero. Unfortunately, on Lap 7, Mangano attempted to overtake Inostroza after the first hairpin, sending the Mazda driver wide and out of control before eventually colliding with the Porsche and taking them both out of the fight. Mangano would continue to pick up warnings and penalties throughout the race, ending any chance of a potential points finish.

Around them, drivers were starting to come in for their mandatory pit-stop to change compounds. This in the process reignited the battle for the lead between the Volkswagen of Suzuki, AMG of Bonelli and Nissan of Hafidi. Behind them, the Toyota of Kokubun - now sporting Soft tires - was catching fast. With Hafidi struggling for pace and having just made a mistake, he chose not to fight Kokubun and let him by to challenge the drivers ahead. From then on, it was a simple case of overtaking the drivers on the straights before the braking zone for the Toyota and he took the lead with two laps remaining.

On the final lap, Suzuki made a last attempt to get past Bonelli, coming to within 6 hundredths of a second at one point. However, the pole-sitter Volkswagen was unable to get past the AMG and settled for third, while Kokubun went on to take the win ahead of them.

Race[]

Much of the race action took place at the front. With Serrano leading, Gallo, Kokubun and Kawakami immediately posed a threat to him and battled for position. This allowed Drumont to join the fight, and eventually Inostroza near the end of the race. Despite the constant threat from behind and the ever changing order of the top 6, Serrano managed to hold onto the lead for every lap and take the race win - the top 6 were separated by just over a second.

Trivia[]

GTWS Round 3 Manufacturers Subaru number box

Team Subaru's car during the Manufacturers Cup race starting line-up; note the flipped number box.

GTWS Round 3 Nations FIAGTC banner

The FIAGTC banner (right) during the Nations Cup podium ceremony; this error also appeared during Round 2.

  • During the Manufacturers broadcast, not only the Chevrolet and Volkswagen teams had the same car number (#102), the Subaru's car number decal appeared to be flipped, an issue also visible during the virtual podium ceremony in the previous round. For the Subaru number decal, this occurs because the number box is actually a decal, not a native number box from the Racing Items portion of the Livery Editor.
  • During the Nations broadcast, the FIAGTC banner seen in previous round appeared again during the virtual podium ceremony. Additionally, the car livery used during the race have the full country names written on them, as well as the old Michelin logo being used on the rear window.
