The 2022 Gran Turismo World Series Showdown was a playoff event in the Gran Turismo World Series that took place on July 30-31, 2022, at the Red Bull Hangar 7, Salzburg, Austria. It was the first live Gran Turismo event since the Gran Turismo World Tour in Sydney in 2020, and the first live event in the Gran Turismo 7 era of the competition, as well the first under the Gran Turismo World Tour name.
Series director Kazunori Yamauchi tested positive for COVID-19 days before the event and was not present in-person at the event.[1]
Manufacturers Cup[]
The Manufacturers Cup portion of the event took place on July 30, 2022, as a three-driver endurance race, in which the manufacturer finishing in the top six received World Tour points. The event was plagued with several issues, such as errors in driver entrances resulting in some drivers having to enter twice, controller and network failures, and certain graphical errors. Possibly related to the network issues, the countdown to the start of the stream was restarted once the first countdown ended.
Entry List[]
The Manufacturers Cup race consists of the top 12 manufacturers in the Global Manufacturer Rankings of the 2022 Online Series Season 1, with the partner manufacturers being granted "immunity" from failing to qualify. The car numbers are also determined from the Global Manufacturer Rankings. Each manufacturer has three drivers, one chosen from the best driver in the GT1 League of the online series for each region (Americas, EMEA, Asia-Oceania).
One driver will do the qualifying run, and during the race, all drivers must participate by performing driver changes during the pit-stop period. If a manufacturer is one driver short, the first driver will do the third stint.
(P) indicates a partner manufacturer, which has a guaranteed entry regardless if they finished outside of the top 12 in the online series.

Race[]
At the end of third lap of the original start, network issues began plaguing the race despite the LAN-based nature of the event. Players started experiencing lag, and heading into the first tunnel, the Subaru and Toyota teams lost connection to the network. The race was red flagged for around fifty minutes while troubleshooting was performed; when the race was restarted, it was with a clean slate from the first lap.
The restart went trouble-free until lap 18, when the Porsche team suddenly crashed into a wall before the final turn, then crashing into the pit separator wall on the start-finish straight, after suffering a "hardware issue", speculated to be in relation to the steering wheel (all competitors used Thurstmaster wheels at the event). The Porsche parked in the pits on lap 24, having run the remaining laps presumably on the auto-drive mode in the pause screen (although ghosting was disabled).
Subaru won the race ahead of AMG despite being one driver short, with Toyota defeating Mazda for the late battle for the final spot in the podium. Nissan and Volkswagen rounded up the final points positions.

Nations Cup[]
The Nations Cup portion of the event took place on July 31, 2022 in four elimination stages (for each regional division, plus a repechage/last chance qualifier) leading to the grand finals. All drivers that made it to the Grand Finals will play in Rounds 2 and 3, as well as the World Finals.
Only the grand finals were shown live; the regional finals and the repechage were raced prior to the start of the stream with the highlights shown during the stream. Additionally, a general qualifying round (using the repechage round configuration with 10-minute qualifying time) was also held, but the outcome of the session was not shown during the stream, although the EMEA region is known to have won the general qualifying with Jose Serrano setting the general qualifiers' pole.
For all races, the car number is determined by their qualifying spot.

Trivia[]

The Nations Cup announcement card shown at the end of the Manufacturer Series broadcast. Note the hidden "AI was here" text on the top right.
- At the end of the Manufacturers Cup broadcast, the graphic advertising the Nations Cup race for the following day featured a hidden text, "AI was here", on the top left of the screen, teasing a showcase of Gran Turismo Sophy, an AI project developed by Sony's AI division in collaboration with Polyphony Digital.[8] Only a few minutes' highlights of GT Sophy demonstration was shown on the Nations Cup broadcast, however; the full races were uploaded on September 12, 2022.
- During the Nations Cup Grand Finals race, the sound used in Gran Turismo 4 when a car changes position in its B-Spec Mode is played when one of the finalists is refueling for every 10 liter of fuel added. This sound would also be used in subsequent GTWS broadcasts whenever necessary.
- The Manufacturers Cup race was the second FIAGTC/GTWS live event race to be red flagged, after the Nations Cup Race 1 of the 2019 Gran Turismo World Tour - Tokyo (which was red flagged due to the track being blocked as a result of combination of a wide car, Jaguar Vision Gran Turismo Coupé, being used on a narrow track, Sardegna - Road Track - A).
