The 2024 Gran Turismo World Series Round 1 was the first round of 2024 Gran Turismo World Series live events, which took place on July 6, 2024 at Usine-C, Montreal, Canada. The event featured the first round of Nations Cup, featuring all qualified 12 drivers from all three regions, and Manufacturers Cup, featuring 12 drivers from the Americas region. It was the first GTWS live event to take place across a day since the 2018 World Tour at Salzburg.

The event was open to the general public, much like GTWS live events since 2023, with general ticket sales beginning on May 23 for Gold (two-event admission) tickets and May 30 for single-event tickets. In addition to regular race live streams, live timings were also provided for the first time.

The event also played host for the launch of the 1.49 update, releasing later on July 25, 2024.[1]

Manufacturers Cup[]

The Manufacturers Cup portion of the event opened the show. As for the regional nature of the event, the event was primarily be contested with drivers from the Americas region.

Of note was the absence of defending champion Nissan, who failed to qualify for the live events. In their place is Ferrari, making their first Gran Turismo esports live event appearance since 2018 (having nearly made it only to be bumped out by partner Genesis the year prior), other than the Ferrari 458 Italia GT3 '13 being used for the 2021 Gran Turismo World Series Round 4 during the FIAGTC/GT Sport era of competition.

Entry List[]

The Manufacturers Cup race consists of the top 12 manufacturers in the GT1 League's Global Manufacturer Rankings of the 2024 Online Series, with the partner manufacturers being granted "immunity" from failing to qualify. Each manufacturer is represented by one driver for each region, chosen from the best driver in the Americas region in GT1 League of the online series.

(P) indicates a partner manufacturer, which has a guaranteed entry regardless of if they finished outside of the top 12 in the online series. (fc) indicates a former champion team. (Defending champion Nissan failed to qualify.)

Notes[]

  1. Arthur Mosso, Porsche's top Americas region driver, was moved to the Round 3 in Tokyo, for undisclosed reasons. In the resulting swap, Takuma Sasaki competed in Round 1.
  2. The Mazda team used the Stealth Model version of the car, although the car performs identically to the regular version.
  3. AMG was referred as "Mercedes-AMG" throughout the event, except by commentators.
  4. Lucas Bonelli, AMG's top Americas region driver, was moved to the Round 3 in Tokyo, for undisclosed reasons. In the resulting swap, Guy Barbara competed in Round 1.
  5. Valerio Gallo (Honda's top driver for EMEA region) replaced Mateo Estevez (Americas region top driver) due to the latter's visa issues.[2][3] Estevez was moved to Round 2 in Prague as a consequence.
  6. Genesis finished 17th in the online standings, therefore qualifying through partner immunity. This had the effect of Lamborghini, who finished 12th in the online standings, failing to qualify for the live events.

Race[]

Prior to the start of the Manufacturers Cup race, the July update trailer was revealed. (The trailer was played again before the start of Nations Cup grand final.)

Igor Fraga's experience of actually driving a RC F GT3 in the Super GT series, as well as mastery of his home track, allowed him to maintain a pole-to-win run, with a daring strategy that saw him run soft tires for the entirety of the race other than the final lap to satisfy the tire compound mandates, successfully fending off Porsche (Takuma Sasaki) and Honda (Valerio Gallo) in the process, both of which managing to end with a near-dead heat for the second place.

Nations Cup[]

The Nations Cup portion of the event served as the main event of the show, with all twelve Nations Cup superstars present.

Entry List[]

The Nations Cup format for 2024 saw the format changed again, reverting to the individual format from last year's team-based country format.

Each region is capped to a set number of drivers, for a total of 12 participating drivers. Unlike in 2022 (and in GT Sport era) however, there are no limit on how many drivers can be from each country. The driver limit per region are as follows:

  • Europe, Middle East, Africa: 5
  • North America: 2
  • Central/South Americas: 2
  • Asia: 2
  • Oceania: 1

The lack of country limit per region resulted in North American and Asian region being entirely filled with drivers from one country (United States and Japan, respectively). This excludes Oceania region, which only has one slot.

(c) indicates drivers from the defending Nations Cup champion squad (due to previous year being a team-based format), while (fc) indicates a former champion.

Sprint Race[]

For the event, twelve pre-tuned road cars were prepared; the qualifying order also determines the car picking order. A Daily Race C replicating the event was also held the week of the event, although it does not feature the exact car choices as used on the live race.

Kylian Drumont led pole to finish in a landslide victory in the C7 Corvette, with the Japanese duo fighting a hard charging battle for the second place by the race's last laps as the rest of grid (barring the last places, due to Heck's spinout) finding each other in a close race.

Grand Final[]

Although Drumont's Sprint Race victory almost single-handedly guaranteed him a chance of winning the first Nations Cup live round, his decision to start with soft tires would jeopardize his chances (a spinout following pit exit late in the race did not help his chances). Instead, Japan's fan-favorite Takuma Miyazono managed to fend off the Spanish squad to get the Nations Cup checkered flag.

Players who entered the Bonus Campaign with the correct predictions will receive a Cr. 1,000,000 Credit Ticket for each correct prediction, for a total of Cr. 2,000,000 for those who correctly predicted both winners. The ticket(s) can be claimed starting July 8, 2024, and must be claimed before July 22, 2024.

Michelin Driver of the Day[]

As both Manufacturers Cup and Nations Cup were held on the same day, only one Michelin Driver of the Day award was given; the Michelin Driver of the Day voting involved the top two from both championships being eligible. This configuration was reverted for the next round in Prague.

Viewer Campaign[]

An in-game Viewer Campaign event was held, by simply watching the stream through the game. Delivery of prizes, a car roulette ticket for the Manufacturers Cup and a six-star roulette ticket for Nations Cup, began on July 8, 2024 for those who watched the broadcast in-game by July 7 at 23:59 UTC, while those who watched later (no later than July 14 at 23:59 UTC) received them on July 15.[4]

The prizes for either Viewer Campaigns must be claimed before July 22, 2024, if received on July 8, or July 29, 2024, if received on July 15.

Announced Game Content[]

The content announced at the event was added to Gran Turismo 7 in the v1.49 July 2024 update. Uniquely, this was shown by way of the standard pre-update trailer, and was announced as being part of the event beforehand.

Trivia[]

  • This event was played on a pre-release version of the 1.49 update that was revealed at the event, which includes the updated physics included in that version.
  • This event was the first event to have Dynamic Viewing replay available, a feature also introduced in the 1.49 update that allows players to watch the event again from within the game.
