Abarth & C., the Italian tuning brand responsible for many exciting high-performance cars throughout history, made its official comeback in 2007.
Up to this point, the public face of Abarth had become simply a badge on sports model production Fiats. In the background, however, they had stuck firmly to their roots, diligently competing in the world of motorsports throughout the years.
In 2006, the Abarth moniker was used on a car based on the Fiat Grande Punto for rallying competition, and took two series titles, in both Europe and Italy. This led to the new Abarth being based on the Grande Punto.
The Grande Punto Abarth is actually very modest in terms of first impressions. Without its 1960s-style decals, 17" wheels and plastic wheel arch covers, accommodating the slightly bigger wheels, you would struggle to tell it apart from a standard 3-door model. You might notice that the front and rear aerodynamic bumpers are larger, and that the steering wheel, meters, seats and other fine details have all been refined for a sportier driving experience, but only if you were looking carefully.
Underneath the bonnet however, there is no mistaking this for an ordinary car. The highly tuned 1.4 L turbocharged engine produces 152 BHP and 21.0 kgfm torque, and the front/rear suspension, as well as the chassis, have all been tightened up to provide sharper handling. As a result, this Abarth can chase down 2 L sports models above its class without breaking a sweat. This subtle but expert approach to tuning proved very popular, and the car recorded very good sales right from the outset.
