Description[]
Aprilia released its first-generation RSV in the summer of 1998, a little over a year after Honda debuted its VTR and Suzuki its TL, putting an end to Ducati's monopoly on V-twin sportbikes. The RSV had an originality that made it stand out from the competition, as well as a shorter engine thanks to a cylinder included angle of 60 degrees instead of 90 degrees. This enabled an unusually high front-wheel load for a V-twin, and a long swing arm. The twin-spar frame body features a securely mounted swing-arm pivot. To handle the vibration produced by the 60-degree cylinder angle, Aprilia took the unique approach of mounting two-axle balancers in the cylinder heads ahead of and behind the crank.
The RSV was fully redesigned for 2003, including a body re-engineered to centralise its mass. To do this, the head pipes and rear frame were lowered-by 30mm in the latter case. While maintaining the solid stiffness of the first generation RSV's, the new models offered modern handling centered on the front. These were welcome changes, given the tendency of high 60-degree V-twins to corner as guided by the slight leaning of a driver with a high centre of gravity. The newer RSV therefore corners sharply and easily, like a much smaller bike, making it easier to hold a racing line. These improvements, along with improved torque properties, make for a much more refined V-twin.
An RSV sub-model called the Factory was also made. This luxury model features a black-painted frame and plenty of carbon parts, Brembo radial calipers, and Ohlins suspension and OZ forged-aluminum rims on the front and rear.
