"The world's first all-aluminium production car."
The first mass-production vehicle in the world to use all-aluminum construction was the Audi A2, which made its debut at the 1999 Frankfurt Auto[1] Show. The exterior styling of the A2 was based on the Al2 (A-L-two), a concept car presented at the 1997 Frankfurt Auto[1] Show. With the A2, Audi engineers were shooting for the ultimate lightweight body. One thing it had going for it was its size or lack thereof, measuring only 150.6 inches from bumper to bumper. And thanks to the use of aluminum, the total combined weight of the A2's frame and body was 43 percent lighter than if it had been built from steel. Even fully assembled, the A2 tipped the scales at an amazingly lean 900 kg.
This "lightness of being" translated not just to better fuel economy, but excellent overall performance. The engines offered in the A2 were a gasoline-powered 1.4 liter DOHC inline-4 and a 1.4 liter SOHC inline-3 turbo diesel, both of which were rated at 74 HP. With either engine, the A2 could reach a top speed of 108 mph and run to 62 mph in 12.1 seconds. The car's fuel economy was even more impressive, as it achieved 37.0 MPG for the gasoline model and 54.0 MPG for the diesel.
The A2 was a car ahead of its time and could be called an experimental vehicle from Audi that explored how all cars could, and should, be built in the not-so distant future.
