In-game Description[]

Car Index (GT7)[]

"A DTM machine with two victories in the Class 1 era."

The year 2019 signaled reform for the German Touring Car championships (DTM). The adoption of Class 1 regulations that included the downsizing of engines made it possible to co-host races with the Japanese Super GT that used the same set of rules.

Audi's entry into this revised category was this RS 5 DTM powered by a new engine. The exterior remained the same as the previous car, but the engine was changed from a naturally-aspirated 4.0-liter V-8 to a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4. This provided a dramatic reduction in weight and improvements in weight balance, as well as an output of more than 600 hp, representing a significant bump from that of its predecessor. It was a totally new machine on the inside.

In 2019, Audi introduced six RS 5 DTMs to the series with its works teams. Along with private entries, the RS 5 DTMs were a force to be reckoned with, but the car that showed the most outstanding performance was car No. 33, driven by ace driver Rene Rast. It dominated the opening rounds and finished the season with a pole to win in Race 2 at Hockenheim, besting Nico Muller also in an RS 5. Not only did it take the championship title this year, Rene's Team Rosberg also claimed the team title, making car No. 33 an iconic double-title winner.

The final round of the DTM was a mixed class race, hosted together with Japan's Super GT GT500 machines, and there was also an interleague match hosted in Japan. However, the outbreak of COVID-19 forced Audi to withdraw from DTM competition.[1] It also ended the Class 1 category, which ended after only two seasons.

The Audi RS 5 was a car that truly embodied the ambition and sparkle of the short-lived Class 1 series, and it has undoubtedly left its mark in motorsports history.

Brand Central[]

The Audi RS5 Turbo DTM had an incredible showing at the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) in 2019. A regular participant at DTM events, Audi had been competing with RS5 variants since 2013. But this 2019-spec Audi RS5 Turbo DTM was quite different from its predecessors, notably its chassis and engine. Built to meet DTM's Class 1 regulations, it combined a carbon-composite chassis with a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 engine. The driver of the No. 33 car was none other than René Rast of Audi Sport Team Rosberg. His impressive seven victories over eighteen races won him the drivers title that season. Finishing at the top of the team rankings as well, this double-title car is certainly one for the history books.

Jeremy[]

This is the Audi RS5 Turbo DTM, the legendary double-title winner of the 2019 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters ('DTM')! First held in 1984, the DTM is a racing car series predominantly featuring German automakers. While DTM regulations have varied over its long history, in the '90s the race became known for its crazy speeds. Heavily-modified cars and the latest tech made it "the fastest touring car race in the world." In 2019, 'Class 1' regulations were introduced, which were near-identical to those of Japan's Super GT GT500 class. This Audi RS5 Turbo DTM was one such machine built to meet these 'Class 1' regulations. The plan at the time was to unify the DTM and Super GT technical regulations... And in 2019, joint-races between the two series were actually held! Afterwards, the DTM switched to a GT3-formula, forgoing a truly unified series with the Super GT. In any event, this Class-1 Audi RS5 Turbo DTM from 2019, the year of those joint-races... is, without a doubt, one of the most valuable champion cars in DTM's history.

Trivia[]

  • It is listed in Gr.2, as it conforms to Class One regulations used by DTM from 2019-2020 before switching to GT3-spec cars in 2021.
  • It is equipped with DRS, as DTM featured this system on their Class One cars, making it the only Gr.2 car with this ability.
  • When wet tires are installed, the default Hankook tire stickers will turn blue.
  • It is missing the rear window car number as present in real life.
  • It is possible to install the 2020-spec wing attachments in GT Auto.
  • Despite being powered by the same inline-4 turbo engine as the other Class One regulation cars, it featured an inaccurate inline-5 sound when it was first added. This was fixed in Update 1.32.
  • If given a custom livery in the Livery Editor, the plaques in the cockpit indicating the car number, driver name, and team name are automatically removed to prevent any mismatch with the exterior livery.
  • For the 2020 DTM season, Team WRT's entry (also an RS 5), driven by Harrison Newey, featured Gran Turismo sponsorship as part of a personal sponsor. However, it was instead opted to feature René Rast's Team Rosberg car.[2]

Notes[]

  1. Officially, Audi's reason for the withdrawal was their reluctance to compete with few rival manufacturers after the withdrawal of Aston Martin at the end of 2019 - itself a replacement for Mercedes-Benz after 2018.
  2. Gran Turismo is Sponsoring an Audi DTM Race Car (But It’s Probably Not Heading to the Game) - GTPlanet
