In-game description[]

"Also known as the E9, this fabulous BMW coupé debuted in the 1960s. This CSL variant is based on the 3.0 CS, but is 200 kg lighter. This was necessary for European Touring Championship homologation. While it might not look all that different from a 3.0 CS at first glance, the doors and bonnet are actually aluminum."
―In-game description of the car, from GT7's Used Car Dealership

BMW followed up its popular 2800 CS, introduced in 1968, with the 3.0 CS luxury sports coupe three years later.

The 2800 CS wore the body of the 1965 2000 C, but possessed a longer front overhang to make room for a 2.8-liter inline-6, replacing the 2000C's four-cylinder engine. With the 3.0 CS, BMW enlarged the engine, known as the "Big Six," to 3.0 liters, resulting in 177.5 HP and 188.0 ft-lb of torque. To offset the power increase, BMW fitted 4-wheel disc brakes to the 3.0 CS.

Such a car would make for an excellent race car, BMW concluded, so when the 3.0 CS took to the track, a special lightweight homologation version was offered, one that weighed 441 lbs less than the base model. This car was called the 3.0 CSL with the "L" standing for "leicht," which means lightweight in German.
