"A homologation model that once claimed victory in the DTM. The blister fenders are a testimony to its performance."

The first M3 of BMW appeared in 1985. This was a road car developed by BMW M, based on the E30 3 series, as a base car for participation in touring car racing.

Based on the 2 door sedan, the tread width was widened, and the fenders were flared to match. Together with front and rear spoilers as well as side skirts, even the angle of the C pillar and rear window was revised, with the rear boot changed to a high deck style. This improved the Cd value of the car from 0.38 to 0.33. The engine was a special 2.3 litre DOHC inline 4 cylinder, with a maximum output of 192.3 BHP, and a maximum torque of 23.4 kgfm.

The race spec model was introduced from 1987, and in the DTM it dominated the series by winning 5 races out of 10. While the car gained fame in motorsports around the world, further advancements were made to the homologation model road car.

In the same year, the M3 Evolution was released with even further improved aerodynamics and a 207 BHP engine. In 1988 the engine was further improved to produce 216.9 BHP in the M3 Evolution II, and in 1989 the final model of the E30 type M3 was released. The final model, called the M3 Sport Evolution, had a bigger displacement of 2.5L according to racing regulations, and produced 234.7 BHP/24.5 kgfm. Dedicated front and rear spoilers were also produced.
