Description[]
By replacing the conventional K Series longitudinal crank, horizontal 4-cylinder, 1,200-cc engine with a transversely-mounted and steeply-inclined 4-valve, inline-4-cylinder 1,157 cc, liquid-cooled, dual-overhead-cam unit, the K1200R is worthy of being called a "new generation" K Series model.
Promising a persuasive 0 to 60 mph in 2.8 seconds, this is the most powerful production motorcycle engine in the history of BMW Motorcycles. By canting the cylinder block 55 degrees towards the front wheel, the K1200R has a straight air intake with a downdraft fuel supply while also maintaining the low center of gravity that is a major design policy at BMW. This engine placement also enables a more compact riding position.
The rear of the K1200R is traditional BMW, with a shaft drive and Paralever suspension, but the front suspension adopts a Duolever construction that sets it apart from the Telelever standard in the R Series. The handlebar-mounted brake lever operates both front and rear brakes while only the rear brake is activated by the foot lever. This Partial Integral adaptive braking system includes the anti-locking brake system. Select BMW's optional ESA—Electronic Suspension Adjustment—and you'll be able to adjust the damping modes electronically for both solo and two-up riding to either "Normal", "Comfort" or "Sport" with a single button.
Quite different from previous K series, the riding position will surprise you once you straddle the seat and feel the slim knee-grip area and compact connection between the handlebars, the footpegs, and the seat. The K1200R is built to allow the rider to dynamically shift his body forward, backward, left and right in supersport style, and the bike's aerodynamics are still typically high BMW quality.
Right along with engine characteristics that deliver sharp acceleration at mid and high revs and excellent linear throttle response, the high stability of the front and rear suspension makes even recovery from a deep lean extremely controllable, like never before in a BMW. The Duolevel suspension on the K1200R lets you enjoy body shifting from front to rear even more so than the Telelever did, and it skillfully incorporates the BMW feeling of a flat ride. Whether solo or two-up, the ride is safe, comfortable, fun, and fast. With its original styling and high functionality, the K1200R is one motorcycle that just doesn't back down from big bikes made in Japan.
