Description[]
Ever since the 1923 debut of the R32, its first motorcycle, BMW has consistently installed engines with the crankshaft parallel to the frame—although the special F650 was the one exception. Then came 2004 and the K1200S, the first model that BMW supplied with a transversely-mounted inline-4-cylinder engine. The newly designed power unit on the K1200S was aligned laterally across the frame for a shorter wheelbase and a straight intake tract and thus could gain the power and performance befitting an "S" model bike. This would have been virtually impossible using the longitudinally-mounted unit of the old K-bikes, for which such changes would cause the engine to be excessively long and the intake system to project too far outward.
The effect achieved with the transverse engine was enormous. While the K1200RS model increased its speed linearly up to about 125 mph, the K1200S hammers out powerful acceleration all the way up to 150 mph and beyond. It has plenty of acceleration at 3,000 r.p.m., and its power is still exhilarating in the midrange of 4,000 to 6,000 revs per minute. Though this bike demonstrates a maximum output of 167 bhp, and can rev beyond 10,000 r.p.m., high-rev power isn't overly emphasised. Rather, in true BMW fashion, the bike is designed to let you enjoy a sporty trip to your destination in as short a time as possible.
Other noteworthy advantages to turning the engine sideways include an even more natural steering response and because the riding position is moved forward, closer handlebars for improved comfort, considerable ease standing at stops, and marvellous cornering performance. Though the K1200S isn't made for curves quite like a racing bike, on winding roads it will trace most any line you choose and let you become totally absorbed in the ride.
The K1200S also has BMW's Duolever front-wheel suspension for optimum riding comfort and the switch-operated Electronic Suspension Adjustment system, which lets the rider adjust the spring preload to suit the front and rear damping force and load.
Even with its transverse engine, the K1200S is pure BMW.
