BMW's souped-up M models have long attracted car enthusiasts with their superb driving performance, and fans of the Bavarian car manufacturer received a special treat when an M Coupe was added to the Z4 lineup in 2006, roughly four years after the first Z4 appeared.
While the earlier version of the M Coupe was a hatchback, the new Z4 M coupe was a pure 2-seater. Although the car looked identical to the base Z4 from the front, the enclosed greenhouse that arched all the way from the A-pillar to the C-pillar was specifically redesigned for the coupe. The rigidity of the resulting chassis was very high, twice as strong as that of the roadster. In addition, the coefficient of drag (Cd) was 0.35, 0.02 better than the roadster's.
The most notable feature of the M Coupe was its engine. It utilized the S54B32, a 3246-cc DOHC inline-6 from the M3, producing 338 HP/7900 rpm and 269.0 lb-ft of torque at 4900. The only transmission available on this model was a ZF-manufactured 6-speed manual; a mechanical limited-slip differential was also included as standard equipment.
Also, the M Coupe came with a state-of-the-art power steering system with a hydraulic assist mechanism to improve steering feel. As a result, this car was deemed as one of the best handling sports cars in the world, with head-snapping power to match.
