Every year, on a player's birthday (as registered on their PlayStation Network account), the game will give a prize car to the player, provided the player logs into the game in time when signed to PlayStation Network with online servers being operational.
In Gran Turismo 5, where the feature debuted, cars are delivered using an item called Birthday Gift Car Ticket; the ticket is only given if the player is of Main Account age (at least 18 years old) before May 30, 2014, when the online servers were gone, it`s no longer possible to get birthday cars in this game.
In Gran Turismo 6, the player is instead directly rewarded with a car with the year close to the birth year of the PSN account; additionally, it is possible to re-roll the player's birthday car by restarting the game when prompted to select the car's color (or whenever to use the newly received car, if the car is only available in one color), as the game does not write the save data until the prompt to use the car is answered. However, not all cars from the player's birth year can be received. With the termination of the game's online services that occurred on March 28, 2018, it is no longer possible to receive birthday cars in GT6.
The functionality also returns in Gran Turismo Sport, however the car chosen by the game is no longer tied to player's birth year. This allows the player to obtain cars without assigned years (such as fictional race cars) as a birthday car. Although the termination of the game's online services occurred on January 31, 2024, it is still possible to receive birthday cars in GT Sport,[1] however the player must not delete their GT Sport save data.
Birthday cars return in Gran Turismo 7 version 1.15, with the player being able to pick up birthday cars a week before their registered birthday (or a week after) from the GT Café by picking Sarah. Sarah responds to the player "Happy birthday, [Nickname]!" and then Luca says "Happy birthday! Sarah spillied the beans, so I baked you a cake." then shows the exterior of GT Café in the night with fireworks setting up and the car is seen and the message "Happy birthday, [Nickname]!". appears. Only cars available for sale from Brand Central can be obtained as a birthday gift.
