In-game description[]
"A 4th generation Camaro SS, redesigned by Gran Turismo for racing."
Gran Turismo and the Chevy Camaro race car have a long history together; a race car version of a fourth-generation[1] Camaro was available in the very first installment of Gran Turismo and, in fact, was one of the very first sports cars incorporated into the game.
Born in 1966, the Chevrolet Camaro was General Motors' answer to Ford's wildly successful Mustang. Since then, the FR (Front engine, Rear wheel drive) Camaro and Mustang have reigned supreme in what is known as the "pony car" category in America. The third member of the U.S. Big Three, Chrysler, has also reentered the mix with the recent launch of its revised Dodge Challenger.
But the race car version featured in Gran Turismo is based on a fourth-generation Camaro SS, the model designation for the highest performance version of the car. Under its hood resides a brawny 5.7-liter OHV V8 producing 319 HP at 5,200 rpm in standard guise, but in full-bore race spec has an output that tops a massive 591 HP.
This car measures 193.5 inches in length, 75.2 inches wide and 48.8 inches tall; its fenders have been widened by approximately 0.3 inches to accommodate wider tires for improved performance. Other modifications include racing-spec front and rear spoilers, but its most significant change is its new composite body that brings the car's overall weight down to just 1,160 kg, nearly 400 kg below its stock specification.
