"The origin of the American sports car: the glorious first-generation Corvette."
It wasn't until 1953 until America produced its first real sports car. Until then, U.S. roads were replete with stylish, nimble European sports cars imported en masse after World War II. But everything changed when General Motors produced the Chevrolet Corvette.
The new American sports car boasted cutting-edge technology, including fiberglass body panels and a steel backbone frame. It was powerful too, equipped with a 149.9 HP 3.8-liter inline-6 mounted in the 167.3 inches long, 69.8 inches wide body. All 1953 Vettes were handmade and only 300 examples were produced.
When this first batch sold out almost instantly, GM set up a new factory in St. Louis the following year to meet demand. As a result, 3,640 Corvettes went into customers' hands that year, 10 times more than the previous year.
While the 1954 model was essentially the same as the original, midway through the model year, the cam profile was changed, and engine output increased to 152.9 HP. In 1958, the Corvette had its first significant facelift, highlighted by a four-headlight front end.
Legend Cars (GT7)[]
The Chevrolet Corvette is undoubtedly one of the world's most famous sports cars. When it debuted in 1953... There was no other car in America that could really be called a sports car. Consequently, it became known as 'America's first genuine sports car'. The Corvettes from '53 were built mostly by hand. Moreover, only a mere 300 were produced. Still, they were incredibly popular, and the next year, General Motors improved its production system. This 1958 model exhibits a thoroughly new design with four headlights.

Ah, 1953—an unforgettable year! That was the year that gave us the 'C1,' or first-gen Chevrolet Corvette. And so began the age of mass-production sports cars in the United States of America. While sports cars were already stateside, they were mostly European—and if not, they were rare and costly. In other words, a truly 'American' car had yet to be born. Then General Motors released the Chevrolet Corvette. From 1953 on, this roofless 2-seater pretty much underwent yearly upgrades, each time promising more and more power. This C1 Corvette[1] is from 1958, and is well-known for its major design overhaul. Two headlights became four, and the bonnet was given a number of fake louvres. By the time 1960 rolled around, GM was pumping out C1s, a sign of its enduring popularity. To this day, the Corvette remains synonymous with American sports car culture... Making it one of the most important sports cars in automotive history.

Trivia[]

- In GT Auto, roll hoops used by the Art Morrison Corvette '60 can be installed, making it the first car with a GT Auto part originating from a SEMA Gran Turismo Awards winner.
- In the Livery Editor, the white parts of the side are considered part of the Body 2 layer, typically used for the hood in most cars.
