"The special masked car used before the official announcement of the 7th generation Corvette."
―In-game catch text for the car, from GT6's Dealership

The Chevrolet Corvette C7 Test Prototype is a pre-production test car produced by Chevrolet. It appears in Gran Turismo 5 (as a free DLC car) and Gran Turismo 6. As a top-secret prototype, the true form of the car is hidden behind a black vinyl camouflage which remains in place while the car is being driven. Only when the final prototype was launched on January 13, 2013 was the actual appearance of the car revealed.

Description[]

The 7th generation Corvette was announced in January 2013. This Test Prototype is the actual experimental car that was used right up to the announcement, to test the car's performance and durability.

With spy photos of the Corvette valued at an estimated $100,000, Chevrolet went through extreme measures to disguise the test car. In fact, a designated Corvette design team was tasked with developing custom camouflage to conceal the new design elements.

Every inch of camo is intentional; strategic padding and pitch-black vinyl serve to disguise an all-new silhouette. Even dummy head and tail lamps are used beneath the camo to deceive the eye during test runs. It may be interesting to line up the car with the actual Corvette that was announced to compare.

This car was also the special model that allowed users of Gran Turismo to drive the 7th generation Corvette Test Prototype as they wished through an online update, before the official announcement.

Well over a thousand tests were performed, with millions of hours invested, but only 5 elite drivers were certified to drive this Corvette Test Prototype. It's now your turn to drive through the eyes of the 6th test driver.

Trivia[]

  • Prior to the car's official DLC release on November 28, 2012, the car was quietly included in version 2.09 (released November 6); it was not acknowledged in the game's update notes, but appeared on demo mode showcases as a teaser.[2]
  • Unique to the car is a "dead gear" (6th gear) feature that allows it to achieve limitless top speed, as long as the player is drafting behind a faster opponent, and this makes it ideal for Special Stage Route X.
  • A duplicate version of the car, called "XXXXXXX" and internally named "corvette_c7_proto_13_bm_un" (the used car is named "corvette_c7_proto_13_bm") also appears in GT5 until it was completely removed in version 2.12. This version lacks rear number plates.[3]
