1982 was the end of an era for the Corvette. It was the last year for the popular, voluptuous styling that was derived from the "Mako Shark" concept car and dated to 1968. It was the final year for a chassis that had been used since 1963. (It was also the end of the line for those very '70s options, the 8-track tape deck and CB radio.) But all was not lost. Fuel injection made a reappearance for the first time since 1965. Unlike the performance-oriented fuel injection used from 1957 through 1965, the "Cross-Fire Injection" of the '82 'Vette was developed to meet fuel economy and emission standards. But it did help the 350 cubic-inch pushrod V8 make 200 BHP at 4200 rpm, ten more horses than previously. 285 lb/ft of torque, peaking at a low 2800 rpm, gave good off-the-line acceleration. The 1982 Corvette was a fast, good handling car for its day, at the end of the automotive Dark Ages, and heralded better days to come for Corvette enthusiasts.
