Of the long-running Chevrolet Nova lineup, the hottest grade model of this compact car was the Nova SS. The SS stands for Super Sport, and it was a car in the category of "Pony Cars" that gained popularity from the mid-sixties in North America. These cars were compact, sporty cars for the younger generation of the era.
The 30-year history of the Nova can be separated into 5 generations, and though the SS model exists in all of these generations, the most high-performance models belong to the 3rd generation cars produced from 1968 to 1974.
The Nova SS until then were just sports models, with an optional 345 BHP 327 engine. The standard model was a 118 BHP 194 inline-6, and a 192 BHP 283 V8.
In the 3rd generation model, they only came in V8, with the 290 BHP 350 being standard. A 396 with different levels of tuning at 345 BHP and 369 BHP were provided, bumping up the power range of the series. The transmission was a 4-speed close-ratio, and a more heavy duty transmission was set as an option. It also became possible to select sports options such as front disc brakes and limited-slip differentials, and depending on the choice of the buyer it was possible to tailor a fairly thorough sport spec car.
The beginning of the 1970s was when the high-power American cars reached a peak, and the Nova SS from the era has long maintained its popularity as a compact but 'manly' sports model.
