Description[]
"A high-powered pickup with roots dating back to the 1948 C3100."
The Chevrolet SSR has a unique style, and with roots that harken back to the 1948 C3100 pick up, and it has a unique back-story as well.
The C3100 was the first new vehicle designed by Chevrolet after the war. It became an overnight best-seller among people who'd been waiting and hoping for a new car to buy. After deciding on their post-war policies, this success became one of Chevrolet's major goals. In other words, the C3100 was one of the vehicles that lead to pick-ups eventually occupying a solid share of the automobile market. The true form of the SSR is a commemorative model which brings the essence of the epoch making truck which had represented the post-war years, and bringing its essence back into the 21st century.
Mechanically, the SSR was built on an independent frame with an FR layout. The engine was a newly-developed 5.3L[1] aluminum block Vortec V8 that generated a maximum output of 290 HP, quite powerful for a pick-up. The underbody, dominated by large-diameter 20 inch wheels, was stylistically reminiscent of the custom hot-rods of the day, and brought abput a feeling that it had been customized by hand from the start.
The roof was a retractable hardtop and, as shocking as this looked, it was actually quite practical. The bed was covered with a rigid plastic tonneau cover, making it no less convenient than a normal car's trunk. Building hot-rods based on classic pick-ups has long been the bread-and-butter of the hot-rod scene. However, the idea of the SSR, a factory-spec hot-rod unchanged from the original concept car, would have been unthinkable in the conservative GM of the past.
