Description[]
"Quick and lightweight, a favorite in the motorsports scene."
Against tough competitors like the new VW Golf GTI and Opel Astra SRi, Citroën launched the Xsara to compete in the European C-segment market. It was released domestically in its home country in 1997, and exportation to Japan started in 1998.
Three styles of bodies were available, a 3-door coupe, a 5-door hatchback, and a 5-door wagon. Inline-4 engines ranging from 1.4L to 2.0L, gas or turbo diesel, were available. Japanese versions were limited to the 1.6L, 1.8L, and 2.0L DOHC inline-4 engines. The power figures were: 89 HP and 101.2 lb-ft for the 1.6L, 99 HP and 112.8 lb-ft for the 1.8L, and 135 HP and 143.2 lb-ft for the 2.0L. Later, the 1.8L engine was dropped from from the lineup.
The VTS model featured a highly tuned 2.0L engine. Producing 163 HP and 142.4 lb-ft, this was a sports model equivalent to the Peugeot 306 S16, however, production was stopped in 2001. In Japan, only the VTR model, equipped with a 1.6L engine, was offered with a manual transmission. The VTR was only available in a 3-door coupe body, and agile handling performance was its charm. With a relatively light weight of 1180 kg, its 1.6L engine was sufficient enough to enjoy the car's driving performance. The handling was surprisingly aggressive, with the nose pulling forcefully into corners. It is not a refined driving style, but it lets you enjoy a good, sporty lightweight FF feeling.
In September 2000, a minor change was implemented. The front mask was changed to look similar to the new "C" family. The engine too, was improved, with the 1.6L VTR bumped up to 107 HP. It became a beloved vehicle on the motorsports scene, from the WRC to grassroots races.
