Description[]

"Normal: Giorgetto Giugiaro is a legend in the world of car design. He's worked on so many great cars, it would be hard to pick just one to define him. But if I had to choose... I'd go for the De Tomaso Mangsuta, a car he designed while working for Carrozzeria Ghia. The Mangusta looks more striking than many of Giugiaro's later designs. There's something elegant about its sleek lines... it's simple yet glamorous and muscular, too. The Mangusta debuted in 1966, and only 400 were produced. It's powered by a Ford overhead valve V8. These days they're highly sought-after as early examples of Giugiaro's genius."
―In-game description of the car, from GT7's Legend Car Dealership
"Christian Dior: The De Tomaso Mangusta is an iconic 1960s sports car. It is one of car designer Giorgetto Giugiaro's most legendary creations, and its value has risen quite a bit in recent years. Now we have a very interesting chapter added to the history of the Mangusta. Introducing a Gran Turismo original, the Mangusta "Christian Dior". This car was created in collaboration with the famous French couture house Christian Dior. The aim of Dior here was to infuse the sports car with its elegant brand essence. The designer who worked on this project is Kim Jones, Dior Men's Artistic Director. The Mangusta he customized is characterized by its chic body color and stripe, and, of course, the "Dior" signature on its side. The racing number 47 on the body is also strongly tied to the history of the Dior Brand. Last but not least, a special racing suit and helmet have been designed specifically to accompany this Mangusta!"

Car Index (GT7)[]

De Tomaso introduced its second production sports car, the mid-engine Mangusta, in 1966, after its first offering, the Vallelunga, left many serious drivers wanting for more power. So, instead of going with the Vallelunga's 1.5-liter inline-4, De Tomaso chose to install a Ford V-8 into the new car. North American Mangustas received the 302-cu.-in. engine while other models took on the 289-cu.in. version. Both versions produced 305.7 HP and were mated to a ZF-made 5-speed gearbox.

The car was extremely lightweight, weighing in at a lean 2866 lbs., which allowed the Mangusta to run to 100 km in 6.0 seconds and reach a top speed of 250 km/h.

Although only 401 were made, the combination of the gorgeous Italian bodywork designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, who was working for Carrozzeria Ghia at the time, and American V-8 power set the stage for the famous De Tomaso Pantera that came along in 1970.

Café Conversations (GT7)[]

Hideo Kodama (Mangusta '69)[]

What's great about this car is the body, penned by a young Giorgetto Giugiaro, then chief designer for Ghia. The form is clean and simple, as though it had been made in a single brushstroke. Half a century later, it still looks rather fresh. Sporting a Ford V8 in a backbone frame adopted from the early Vallelunga... Its mid-ship engine is accessible by a gullwing-style rear hatch. Design-wise, it displays a nice, off-the-cuff creativity.

Kim Jones (Christian Dior)[]

Well it seems like you really enjoy collecting cars? I tend to collect things I love myself, so I know exactly how you feel. Now, I'm the Artistic Director of Dior Men's collections, and I'm always thinking about new, novel things. Recently I came up with an idea about a new collaboration. The initial idea came from advertisements involving cars and Dior from the '60s to the '80s. At the time, Dior had a line of perfume that sponsored races like the Dakar Rally and the 24 hours of Le Mans. And I thought to myself, what if you combined the elegant essence of Dior with a legendary sportscar? I was sure it would result in an epoch making sportscar that would surprise everyone! And I had a particular car in mind that would be perfect for this collaboration. The iconic 'De Tomaso Mangusta' from the 1960's. This De Tomaso Mangusta was designed by Giugiaro during his years at Carrozzeria Ghia. He's a genius who entered the world of car design at 17 years of age, and became the chief developer at Ghia at just 27. I've heard that Giugiaro's father was an artist. So I guess the styling ability of Giugiaro also comes from the Artist lineage in him. Now I realized that there is a similarity between the timeless, classic atmosphere of the Mangusta, and the tone of Dior. So I selected a slightly conservative, cream color for the Mangusta, with a modest but chic stripe, with the "Dior" lettering on the side. The car number '47 was derived from the year of the first Dior collection, in 1947, and all these ideas came to life in the project with Gran Turismo, resulting in this very special car. There's also a very special magic cast on this Mangusta as well. I designed a special racing gear for the driver of this car. The suit is yellow, a very iconic color for sportscars. It stands out, but is not too flamboyant. The logo representing Dior uses the classic 'CD Diamond' taken from the same era as the car, from the '60s and '70s. The shoes are from our well known 'Diorizon' series, but the upper side is changed and newly redesigned for driving. It would make me very happy if this becomes one of the surprises in your collection!

A special liveried variant in collaboration with the French fashion house, Dior, was made available from August 25, 2022 (following the release of Update 1.20) to January 31, 2023; it then was moved to a normal slot, not in the "Hot" slot. Other than the special livery, the interior has been changed from black to cream (which changes when the car is repainted). In-game, it is referred to as the "De Tomaso Mangusta (Christian Dior)".

Trivia[]

  • In a trailer featuring the car, its name is misspelled as "Mangsta". This typo was fixed in the final release, but persists in the Engine Model field ("Windsor-289-HiPo-Mangsta").
    • The Christian Dior variant's engine model name has been renamed to "Windsor-289-HiPo-Dior".
  • "Mangusta" is Italian for "mongoose", an animal said to be able to kill cobras; rumor has it that the car was named as such due to a failed deal between Carroll Shelby and Alejandro de Tomaso.
  • Like with the Mazda RX-Vision GT3 Concept Stealth Model and the Red Bull X2019 Competition 25th Anniversary edition, the Christian Dior variant is not shown in the Car Index (it also has no acquired status when viewed in the dealership); however, it will not take the original car in its place if the original Mangusta has not been collected beforehand. Additionally, car styles created for each version of the car are not interchangeable.
  • The Christian Dior variant has no coded model year unlike the regular car, and as a result the variant is ineligible for model year-restricted events. It is also the only Legend Car Dealership car to have that property. Furthermore, the Christian Dior model is also known for the longest sale of any car in the Legend Car Dealership as of version 1.50.
    • The Dior version is the only special edition vehicle that is sold normally and can appear in the Legend Car Dealership on occasional intervals.
  • While driving the Dior version, the player will drive a special suit, also designed by the company.
