In-game description[]

"The De Tomaso Pantera is a concept car that's not dissimilar to a road-going Ford GT40. The Italian maker Carrozzeria Ghia designed the body. It's equipped with Ford's own 5.7L V8 engine. The Pantera combines the sleek sensibilities of an Italian supercar and the raw power of an American muscle car."
―In-game description of the car, from GT7's Used Car Dealership

Car Index (GT7)[]

The Pantera is a midship supercar that appeared as the 3rd model of De Tomaso, a former sports car manufacturer of Italy. It was born as a car co-developed with Ford, and the project arose from Lee Iacocca who was vice president of Ford at the time. Iacocca initiated the project to boost brand image, by making a sportscar like the first Ford GT40. He was the one who invited close friend and founder Alejandro De Tomaso to join the project.

Ford aimed to make the price reasonable, and to sell the car in large numbers. That is why the car on the outside is an Italian supercar styled by Tom Tjaarda of Carrozzeria[1] Ghia, but powered by a Ford V8 in a monocoque that was best suited for mass production.

At the time of debut, the Pantera was powered by a 5.8 litre OHV V8 351 with CDI. To save cost it was mounted midship almost stock, but the engine as is already produced 330 BHP of power and 45 kgfm of torque, providing both power and performance equal to or better than other rivals of its day. While not powered by their own engine like other Italian brands, it was a project that made perfect sense, taking the best of both worlds from the American and Italian car industries.

Café Conversations (GT7)[]

Shiro Nakamura[]

This design is by Tom Tjaarda during his Ghia years. His specialty is designing elegant lightweight cars. The Pantera is indeed one of his signature creations, but I personally feel that for a supercar, it's a bit reserved. In America, the De Tomaso Pantera is still quite popular. The Pantera is a model originally developed by Ford, but it strongly possesses Italian supercar qualities. It was an affordable supercar... So instead of keeping it tucked away for safe keeping, many owners enjoyed tuning their car to their own tastes.
