In-game description[]

This description is taken from the PAL version of Gran Turismo 2:

The Dodge Challenger was the smaller, more compact brother to the famous Charger, but it was no less potent. The Challenger reached its zenith in 1970, when muscle car were at their best. Sharing much of its underpinnings with its stablemate, the Plymouth Barracuda, but with a completely different body, this 'compact' muscle car was still wide enough to take the biggest engines. As you'd expect, the Challenger came with a large choice. The Dodge could be had with everything from a 275 BHP, 340 cubic inch V8, through to a 390 BHP or even the almighty Hemi. In its popular R/T guise it turned in impressive performance times too. The standing quarter mile was dispensed with in 14.6 seconds, the sprint from 0-60mph in 6.9 seconds and the car eventually ran out of steam at 128 mph. Even more impressive was its low down pulling power, the Challenger boasted an incredible 490lb/ft of torque at just 3.200 rpm. Power was put down to the rear wheels via either a three speed auto, or a four speed manual gearbox, while the car came with power steering as standard. The Dodge Challenger T/A (Trans American) was yet another specialist performance version. A car for the extrovert, the T/A boasted lurid paintwork and loud, side exiting exhaust pipes. Power came courtesy of a worked over 340 that benefited from a functional fibreglass hood which fed air to three Holley 2-barrel carbs. Other options on the T/A included a large rear spoiler, 15 inch wheels, a four speed gearbox and a quick ratio steering rack. Even the dash was special, with a speedometer[2] that read up to 150 mph!

Trivia[]

  • Despite being referred to as a 1972 model, this Challenger is actually a combination of multiple 1970 models. The bodywork is taken from an R/T (most notably the 1970-only lights and grille with red R/T badging), while the side exhausts and engine are from a T/A. Both of those models are also mentioned in the Challenger's description.
  • The earliest demos of Gran Turismo 2 contain an unused, earlier Challenger model featuring the 'shaker' hood from a 1970 440 6-pack car.

Notes[]

  1. Listed as "Bright Bluemetallic" in the game
  2. Shortened to "speedo" in the game
