In-game description[]

This description is taken from the NTSC version of Gran Turismo 2:

By 1971, rising insurance rates, upcoming safety and emissions legislation, and changing consumer tastes were squeezing muscle car sales. Some dilution of performance was inevitable for survival. The completely restyled Charger became less of a performance-at-all-costs machine and more of a personal specialty car that it had been in the late 1960s. It was a return to the original Charger concept of 1966 - a stylish, comfortable car with balanced performance. Despite the cries of muscle car aficionados of the time, the '71 Charger was a sales success. The '71 Charger line featured plenty of variety, with a full range of trim levels and engine choices ranging from the 225 cubic-inch "Slant Six" through 318, 340, 383 and 440 cubic-inch V8s, and even the fabled 426 "Hemi". The Super Bee, with the 383 cubic-inch V8 (300 BHP at 4800 rpm, 330 lb-ft of torque at 3200 rpm) standard, was the budget performance special, low on show and with plenty of go. The R/T, with the 440 "Six-Pack" or the Hemi, was the last of the full-bore beasts. Fully-equipped with all of the luxury features of the day, and with a standard heavy-duty suspension and available front disc brakes, the R/T was much more civilized than the muscle cars of only a couple of years before and not particularly slower. The 440 still had 390 BHP at 4700 rpm and 480 lb-ft of torque at 3200 rpm, and the Hemi's 425 horses at 5000 rpm and 490 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm were forces to be reckoned with. The Charger R/T was like a tyrannosaur at the end of the Age of Dinosaurs - doomed, but mean and full of muscle to the end.
