The Dodge Viper GTS-R Team Oreca '00 is a race car produced by Dodge. It first appeared in Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec and has been featured in all subsequent mainline games up to Gran Turismo 6.

In the Gran Turismo series, there are two versions of this car, featuring Chrysler and Dodge branding and #51 and #91 respectively. Both versions in real life used the same chassis number, GTSR-C31, which was sold to Brookspeed Racing in 2001.[1]

The Chrysler-branded version was entered in the GTS class of the 2000 24 Hours of Le Mans, where it was driven by Dominique Dupuy, Olivier Beretta, and Karl Wendlinger. The car finished the race in 7th place overall, achieving the 1st place in its class. The Dodge-branded version competed in the GTS class of the 2000 American Le Mans Series season, where it was driven by Olivier Beretta, and Karl Wendlinger. The car achieved a 1st place finish in the Team's Championship, with Beretta and Wendlinger finishing respectively in 1st and 2nd place in the Driver's Championship.

Description[]

"The unbeatable machine which took the class championship in both the ALMS and the Le Mans 24-hour races."

At approximately the same time as the release of the Viper Coupe version GTS, the car known as the GTS-R race model was also introduced to make a splash in the motor sports car market. Chrysler then went and organized a team to participate in GT endurance races all over the world, including the Le Mans 24 hour race. A partnership was formed with ORECA, the team from France who were extremely well-known for their manufacture and operation of endurance racers.

Though the GTS-R's engine had a maximum output of more than 690 HP, it contained mechanical components which were not very different from normal vehicles marketed to the public, and no different from a publicly sold racer of a private team.

This was because it participated in the GTS class where the modifications allowed was limited. However, the difference in overall ability was very clear, and it was difficult for a private team using a Viper to drive faster than the ORECA. This did not change even when ORECA took over the actual manufacture of publicly sold Viper GTS-R racers, and made it clear that there was an invisible wall between a works team and a private team.

In 2000, the ORECA team aimed for a world GTS championship in the 24 hour ALMS (American Le Mans Series). It rivals in this class included the Chevrolet Corvette C5-R[2] and the Porsche 911 GT2[3], but there was little they could do to stand in the way of the powerful Viper. Combined with the performance of the Viper, Team ORECA displayed its true strengths to the world when it became the ALMS 24 hour class champion.

Trivia[]

  • The red color scheme of the racing modifications of the Dodge Viper GTS '96 in GT1 closely resembles this car. Said racing modifications were later reused for the Dodge Viper GTS '99 in GT2.
    • The resemblance, however, is purely coincidental, because the original Gran Turismo game was released two years before the production of this car. However, Team Oreca did use the same livery during the 1999 American Le Mans Series season, making the color scheme in question retroactively period accurate for GT2.
  • In GT3, it is possible to install a racing exhaust on this car; however it costs nothing and will not give the player any additional horsepower.
  • The #51 variant also appears in GT Concept, but it's unplayable. It does, however, appear as a CPU car.
