"The high-performance concept which would be the image leader of the new Viper."
The Dodge Viper underwent a full model change in 2003. However, the base for this new model, which was the Viper RT/10 Concept, was presented 2 years earlier in 2001. The GTS-R, which had been the RT/10's Concept prototype, was also released one year before that, in 2000.
In other words, this new concept model Viper prototype was preceded by the development of the closed body GTS-R. The GTS-R had proved itself to be a significantly more threatening competitor that had previously been expected by people in the world of GT car racing. Daimler-Chrysler Corporation at the time strongly desired to turn this newly developed concept model Viper into the undisputed leader among the top performance race cars of the world.
As for the specifications for the 2000 GTS-R concept car: an 8.0L V10 engine loaded into a closed coupe with the same basic structure as its predecessor. At the time of its release, the engine had a street tuning level, limiting its power to 493 HP.
The name "Viper Conception Coupe" was bestowed upon the GTS-R competition model following its delivery in 2003.
Though it possesses an 8.3L unit, the raec version's maximum output is 552 HP, which was down by 138 HP from the previous race version's 8L, 690 HP iteration. This comes as a result of it being optimized to meet race regulations, but at the same time, the vehicle's cornering, aerodynamics, and various other abilities were significantly enhanced. As a matter of fact, its performance is really neither better nor worse than the older version.
