Description[]
The flagship of the Ducati lineup, the 999R superbike, traces its lineage all the way back to the 851, which first hit the streets in 1988. The 851 evolved into the 888, which underwent a complete redesign for the 1994 season, emerging as the 916. Next was the 996, then in 2001 the 996R, which received a then-new engine, the Testastretta, built with a narrower included valve angle. Ducati released the 998 in the fall of the same year and followed it up in 2002 with the completely restyled 999. Finally in 2003 came this bike, the 999R, a homologation model with a short-stroke engine and beefed-up suspension.
Racing rules forbid changes to displacement (bore x stroke) over the production model, and the 999R was produced to be certified (homologated) as a racing machine. The bike's character as a homologation special was so strong, in fact, that many criticised it as too wild for the street. For instance, traction is difficult to maintain below 5,000 r.p.m.
The 2005 model, however, has performance that goes beyond the requirements for homologation. Numerous improvements were made to increase intake, combustion, and exhaust efficiency, such as larger intake and exhaust halves, greater valve lift, a higher compression ratio, and twelve-hole fuel injectors.
Torque is boosted through the entire range. Even city riding below 4,500 r.p.m. is easy and stress-free. From 6,000 r.p.m. to peak torque at 8,000 r.p.m., the greater torque creates that torquey feel for which Ducati bikes are famous. The 999R cranks out 150 hp - 11 hp more than the 2003 model (and 14 hp more than the 2005 999S) - and redlines 500 r.p.m. higher, at 11,000 r.p.m. Although the 999S is the better bike for riders who want to experience thumping power at low speeds, the 999R delivers both exceptional control and blistering speed for racing circuits and winding roads.
