The SEMA Show, one of the largest custom car shows in the United States, hosts the annual Gran Turismo Awards. In 2012, the 10th anniversary award went to a 1969 Ford Mustang customised by Eckerts Rod & Customs.
Based in Oregon, United States, Eckerts Rod & Customs has been working on the restoration and customisation of classic and muscle cars for over 25 years.
The winning car, named the Mach Forty, might appear at first glance to be a beautifully restored first-generation Mustang Fastback, but as its success would suggest, there's a lot more going on under the hood. Most of the body has been rebuilt, and the floor from the rear seats to the boot has been cut out to allow for a remade Ford GT power train to be installed, transforming the vehicle into a mid-engine design.
The supercharged 5.4L V8 power unit is custom-tuned to achieve a maximum of 850 BHP, and includes a dial control fitted inside the car that allows the output to be adjusted from approximately 599 BHP to 850 BHP. Extensive work has been carried out in order to reinforce the body so that it can contain the raw power on offer. Other modifications include the suspension, reused from the Corvette C6, and a traction control system.
Eckerts Rod & Custom fused together two famous cars from Ford history into a bold concept, delivering a spectacular result that is truly worthy of the 10th anniversary award.
