"A exemplary design by Giugiaro; he said that it was the best work of his life."
The Topolino, Fiat's most famous postwar model, gave way to the Nuova 500 that represented its most popular model from the 1950s to the 1970s. It was succeeded in 1980 by the Panda. This Panda is now referred to as the "Old Panda," because it stayed unchanged until 1993. In 2004, the second-generation Panda appeared and it was known as the "New Panda."
It featured a simple-yet-unique design that exuded an overall elegant personality. Penned by designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, he confessed that "it was the best job of my life," despite his work on numerous supercars. The interior was also extremely simple, with tasteful styling that emphasized functionality. The gauges were easy to read, the controls were all within reach of the driver, and it boasted excellent interior space, especially in back. What didn't fit back there could be tied to the luggage rack.
The Panda came available in many variations, such as models featuring all-wheel drive, electric engines and even one that had Subaru's Continuously Variable Transmission, the ECVT. The "i.e." was particularly noteworthy. i.e. stood for iniezione elettronica in Italian, or "electronic injection". This was for the fuel-injected 1.0-liter powerplant that produced 44 HP. The Panda was warmly received by the European public and went on to become of the most popular cars of its time.
