In-game description[]

The Porsche 911 has always had a high performance version for every generation of its lineup, geared towards motorsports. And the first example of this for the Type 996 generation model, produced from 1997 to 2002, was the 911 GT3.

The GT3, announced in 1999, was based on the Carrera 4 chassis, which has a higher body rigidity more suited for circuit use. In addition to suspension upgrades, it utilises the powerful calipers and discs from the 911 Turbo to handle higher speed ranges.

The engine utilises what is called a GT1 crank case, a high strength crank case used for race cars for withstanding loads at high rpm. The cylinder head is equipped with the Variocam Plus, a 2 stage variable valve lift mechanism. The 3.6 litre naturally aspirated engine produces 355 BHP, which is 59 BHP higher than the standard 3.3 litre 911.

Initially the 911 GT3 was planned for a limited production run of 1400 cars, but a total of 1889 cars were built in the end as a result of high demand.

Brand Central (GT7)[]

The 996 GT3 was a true labour of love for Porsche's top engineers. It built upon the magic of the original 911... And yet it added a distinctly modern twist, not least with the inclusion of a water-cooled engine. This GT3 would be used as the base for many future racing cars. Some say it's the true successor to the 993 Carrera RS. However you look at it, it's a truly historic vehicle.

Used Cars (GT7)[]

This is a GT3 variant of a 996 model in the Porsche 911 series. Its flat-six is packed with dynamic power, allowing you to immerse yourself completely in the driving experience. The rigid body and engine response is somewhat reminiscent of the air-cooled era. But it's precisely these qualities that make the GT3 such a unique machine. Whichever way you look at it, this remains one of the finest vehicles Porsche ever produced.

The original 2001 996-based GT3 is one of the best-kept Porsche secrets! Both technically and mechanically, it is the most raw of all the GT3s! it featured a naturally aspirated GT1/Mezger flat-6 in a reinforced chassis geared towards motorsports. The success of the GT3 was unexpected, with demand exceeding the limited production run! It is pure magic! Serious enthusiasts went with the optional form-fitting race seats and factory-installed roll cage. The immense success of the GT3 caught even Porsche by surprise. In fact, customer demand far exceeded the original production run.

Trivia[]

  • In Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec, together with the RUF RGT '00, is the only car with RR drivetrain (Rear Engine, Rear Wheel Drive).
  • Long before its official debut in Gran Turismo Sport, this car appeared hidden in the game files of GT3. It is unaccessible without the use of cheat devices.
    • It should be noted that the car's body is only present in the NTSC versions of the game. If the player uses cheat codes to access this car in the PAL version, the car's body will default to a Daihatsu MIRA TR-XX Avanzato R '97.
    • Note if the car is added to the garage using cheat devices, the car cannot be purchased using the memory card trade feature; this also affects the Lancia STRATOS '73 and its rally version, both being hidden cars in GT3. The message given when the player tries to buy the car through a trade is the generic "this car is not for sale" message also used if the player tries to buy a car that is not for sale from the dealerships.
  • A white Porsche 911 GT3 based on this model is Kazunori Yamauchi's personal car in real life, which may explain the car being hidden in Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec. He still owns it to this day.
    • During Gran Turismo 3's development, it is speculated that Yamauchi intended for players to use this car (representing his personal 911 GT3) on the final Arcade Mode time trial event in Complex String before it was replaced with the RUF RGT.
  • The model of this car depicted in the games is actually the GT3 Clubsport, which is equipped with a roll cage from the factory; the particular example belonging to Yamauchi is also the Clubsport version. Also, in GT Sport, the car's default show color is in Biarritz White, which is also the same color as Yamauchi's 911 GT3.
