Description[]

"The legendary car that achieved 4 Le Mans wins in the 1960s makes a comeback with modern day specs."

Ford's GT40 is arguably the greatest American race car ever. It accomplished remarkable feats, most notably winning four consecutive 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance races beginning in 1966. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Ford Motor Company, it was decided to resurrect this legendary machine as a modern road car. The Ford GT Concept was born.

The car's styling was heavily influenced by the look of the classic 1960's GT40, but underneath the sheet metal was a boatload of modern technology, including HID headlights. Also, in contrast to the twin-tube aluminum monocoque frame of the original, the new Ford GT adopted an aluminum spaceframe. The suspension system consisted of double-wishbones at all four corners. The engine came in the form of a supercharged 5.4-liter DOHC V8 that produced 500 HP mounted amidship. A 6-speed manual transmission managed power to the rear wheels.

The dashboard was also designed with a retro flavor, featuring old-fashioned toggle switches reminiscent of the GT40. The GT Concept was such a hit that Ford decided to produce the car. The production version made its debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in 2002, with power boosted to 550 HP. In the summer of 2004, the first cars were delivered to customers.
