The Ford RS200 Rally Car '85 is a rally car produced by Ford. It appears in Gran Turismo 4, Gran Turismo PSP, Gran Turismo 5, and Gran Turismo 6.

The car appears to be the #8 driven by Kalle Grundel at the 1986 Swedish Rally, who ended up finishing 3rd in the rally and 9th overall in the standings.

In-game description[]

"A Group B machine with unprecedented performance which was only driven in 4 races."
In 1984, the WRC ushered in the now legendary Group B era. Group B regulations required that only 200 homologation cars can be produced every 12 months. Because of this, it was easy for manufacturers to develop machines especially for the WRC. Among them was Ford, who produced the RS200.

The engine was mounted amidship. It came in the form of a 16-valve DOHC inline-4 known as the Cosworth BDT, an evolution of the BDA. Boosted by a Garrett T4 turbocharger, the engine produced 247 HP in street trim and 420 HP in competition spec. The power could be transmitted to all four wheels via a center differential, but in fact three drive modes were available on the shift lever: "rear-wheel drive, rear-biased full-time 4WD, and balanced torque". The last was selected by locking the center differential.

The overall design was penned by Tony Southgate, a reputed designer of Formula 1 cars. And he was the right guy for the job, because the RS200 was virtually an F1 car for the dirt. However. the final chapter of the RS200 ended prematurely. The RS200 debuted at the 1986 Swedish Rally where it took 3rd place, but soon thereafter, the FIA[1] decided to dissolve the Group B category, and as a result, the RS200's career ended after only four races.

Trivia[]

  • The car that appears in-game is based on the #8 vehicle entered at the 1986 Swedish Rally and driven by Kalle Grundel. This is identifiable due to how prior to 1995, all entrants were given randomized numbers for an event, and the blue rally sticker on the hood which has been changed by Polyphony to read "RS200 Rallycar".
  • The number plate on the front and back of the car read "B200 YOO". Strangely, unlike other rally cars, the plates were left uncensored from its introduction in GT4 instead of being rendered illegible.
  • Until GT5, the Hella logos on the headlights and side skirts were censored for unknown reasons. However, in GT6, said logos are now present without any form of censorship.
  • From the car's introduction in GT4, Swedish flags adorn both fenders of this rally car, and have a pair of semi-illegible names next to the flags. It can be presumed that these names are Kalle Grundel and his co-driver, Benny Melander, as they were both Swedes.
