The 5th-generation Ford Mustang that reached dealerships in 2005 redefined the brand, bringing the legendary car back to its original 1964 roots, both spiritually and stylistically. The new Mustang was based on that of the iconic maiden model, but wrapped in modern clothes, and it was the third part of Ford's "Living Legend" strategy which had started with the Thunderbird, and then the Ford GT.
In 2006, a special name, made famous during the early days of the original Mustang was resurrected: the Shelby GT500. Although the car was different from the original Shelby Mustang in that it was a project initiated by Ford, both its performance and styling were directed by Carroll Shelby himself. And the Ford Special Vehicles Team (SVT) performed its development and production under his guidance as well. The supercharged 5.4-liter DOHC V8 produces 500 BHP/480.2 lb-ft, and the car's suspension and brakes were specially tuned to handle this massive power output. The high level of tuning, as well as its special front and rear spoilers, made this machine from a muscle car to an asphalt-crunching, supercar-eating beast.
But the folks at Ford and Shelby weren't done. They continued to hone the GT500's performance, increasing engine output gradually. With the 2013 model, the car's engine went to a larger 5.8-liter aluminum block, with a remarkable 56 percent of additional boost from the supercharger. Power shot up to a ground-shaking 662 BHP and 630.7 lb-ft of torque, with a greatly improved, massaged drivetrain and chassis to match.
