Gran Turismo 2 has six licenses to acquire with 10 tests each. They are used for entry into the progressively harder events in the game; it also unlocks new tracks in the Arcade Mode disc. Each level becomes more difficult as the player advances. The minimum passing requirement is a bronze trophy, however completion of a license with all gold trophies will award the player with a prize car. The licenses in Gran Turismo 2 are:
- B License
- A License
- International C License
- International B License
- International A License
- Super License
Players will be assigned a specific vehicle to complete these tests. The licenses' details are explained in their respective articles.
Unlike most other games in the series, there are no final license examinations; thus, the tests can be done in any order.
Kid Prizes are awarded if the player fails the bronze time by no more than .030 (three hundredths) of a second. It is more likely achievable after 20 tries of a license test. No times for these are presented to the player like Gold, Silver or Bronze as goals so it is not easy to gauge how to achieve them. If the player has a Kid Prize they can still acquire the license. Kid Prizes can also be obtained for the B and A licenses by importing a GT1 save with A-License or higher completed.
