The pioneering Fairlady Z debuted in July 1989, before any of today's 276 hp super sports models. The model change that produced this Z32 transformed this line from gran turismo-type cars that were well-suited to highway cruising into a line of full-fledged sports models. Departing from the traditional long-nose look, the cars were restyled into a muscular wide-and-low form. The engine and chassis were also revamped for superlative driving performance.

The lineup originally consisted of two-seaters and two-plus-two models, the former offered with a standard or T-top roof; the latter with a T-top roof. In August 1992, a convertible was added to the line-up. Improvements and changes continued to be made, and a minor change was implemented in October 1998, the model's 10th year.

The engine is the Model VG30DETT 3.0-liter DOHC twin turbo V6, also available in an naturally-aspirated version, the Model VG30DE. A 5-speed manual transmission and 4-speed automatic transmission are available, although the Version S two-seater is offered only with a 5-speed manual transmission. Multilink suspension is used in the front and rear. The Super HI-CAS steering system — a Nissan original — is, naturally, electronically controlled.

The most recent minor change refined the exterior, adding even sportier aero parts, improving body rigidity, and giving the Version R specially designed suspension that provides sharper handling.
