Suzuki CONCEPT-S2 '03

The car that Suzuki exhibited at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show was the Concept S2. It was based on the Concept S, exhibited at the previous year's Paris Motor Show, but the S2 was packed with new high-tech features.

There was the groundbreaking roof system, a 3-piece rotating/retracting electronic open-top roof. The roof itself is split into three parts: a roof front, roof rear and rear window. Each component rotates and retracts into the boot. Since this system requires less storage space than that typically needed for traditional folding-tops, four adults could ride comfortably. And considering the small overall size at just 145.4 inches long, 68.1 inches wide and 58.6 inches tall, this was no minor feat.

The exterior was sensual, with strong shoulder lines, and the packaging was excellent, featuring a boxy design that ensured adequate height.

The engine was a lightweight, compact and powerful all-aluminium 1.6-litre DOHC inline-4, but performance figures were not disclosed. The 6-speed semi-automatic gearbox allowed for a genuine sports driving experience.

In the centre of the instrument panel was a 13-inch information display for use with the in-car telemetry. The screen was able to display a variety of video media, not just navigation information. It also boasted a multi-functional TFT[1] LCD readout, Suzuki's idea for a next-generation gauge display.

It is common knowledge that the Concept S2 later reappeared as the 2nd-generation Swift. While the S2 with its unique roof did not become commercially available, there is no doubt that it greatly contributed to the charming appeal of the Swift.
