There were a few glitches in early versions of GT2 that could interrupt gameplay and corrupt saved games (e.g., A player's entire garage getting erased after more than 8 records were set in Machine Tests). Sony later openly admitted that the game was rushed to the market to be on shelves in time for the holiday season, and arranged to exchange affected games for newer versions.

Due to the rushed release, it is only possible to complete 98.2% of the game in the North American 1.0 version. A reference to drag racing in the game's manual, the fact that there are three drag racers — the HKS Drag 180SX and HKS R33 Drag GT-R, which can be won from races and the third by race modifying a Dodge Intrepid ES, and an unused "Drag Race" menu icon (see pictures), strongly suggest that drag racing was to be included. Although the racing aspect was removed, the record-keeping aspect was not. The name of the removed drag strip was believed to be Palm Strip, however this was later debunked. The Palm Strip name is also erroneously listed as one of the locations for certain International A license tests in the NTSC-J version, when in fact they take place on Apricot Hill Raceway.

In the PAL version, because of the ability to change languages (and thereby available manufacturers), players can reach 100.9% completion. The presence of Vauxhall in the English language and Opel in all other languages make this possible.

A minor spelling error can be found in the 1.0 versions, the manufacturer's event for Dodge cars contains the misprint "Viper Festibal" instead of "Viper Festival". There is also another spelling error in the Japanese version - the Luxury Sedan Cup (or Luxury 4-Door Cup in the PAL version) is misspelt "Luxualy Sedan Cup".

In the NTSC-U 1.0 and the NTSC-J versions, Mark Martin's #6 Ford Taurus Valvoline NASCAR stock car is available by race modifying a Ford Taurus SHO '98 in Simulation mode, however in the PAL and later NTSC-U versions a more generic race modification is substituted. Interestingly, the NASCAR modification is playable in Arcade Mode in all versions, and can be made available by race modifying the Taurus and selecting it through the Home Garage feature in Arcade.

GT2 is also unable to identify a car's body type or size, players found that cars can enter events which they should not be able to. Some examples include: any car can enter the first race of the Lightweight K-Car Cup, any car can enter the Wagon Cup (which means the player can win the event without buying a wagon.), and any car can enter the Muscle Car Cup. This is due to the limitations of such a large game and the PlayStation hardware.
