Gran Turismo 4 First Preview is a 2004 preview demo released ahead of the release of Gran Turismo 4.

The First Preview contains five cars and showcases the arcade, photo and time trial modes.

Differences[]

  • A warning message appears upon loading the demo. Roughly translated: This software has different specifications from the product version, so it is possible that unexpected problems may be discovered, such as the software not working properly. Please note that in the unlikely event that a malfunction occurs the disc cannot be replaced.
  • The options menu is a temporary prompt with dropdowns instead of the dedicated menu in the final game.
  • The arcade mode's 'Mode Selection' menu is missing the multiplayer option.
  • The Photo Mode is limited to Marunouchi and Sagano.
  • First Preview calls it Photo Mode, but is called Photo Travel in the final release
  • Tracks list is limited to Nurburgring Nordschleife, Trial Mountain Circuit and George V Paris. George V Paris is the only one of the three without any opponents, but still has a two-lap count and time limit. In First Preview both George V Paris and Nurburgring are grid starts not rolling starts like the Final release.
  • Many tracks and AI opponent cars not accessible by the player, but are visible in the demo replay if the player is idle.
  • The player can select transmission, driving assists and tires (Street, Sports, Arcade and Racing) on most cars. Tires for the Nissan Skyline GTR V Spec II Nur Nur-Special '04 (Nissan FALKEN☆GT-R '04) default to racing only.
  • The time trial and single race only display Start, Exit and Replay buttons along with the number of opponents. Replay button only appears after a race/time trial has been started (same as the final release).
  • Both the Single Race (always two laps) and Time Trial have a 150-second time limit in the bottom left corner.
  • The player is able to drive into the pits but it will not reduce their speed and lock them into a pit crew animation. It treats the pits like any other road the player drives on.
  • The higher chase camera view is accessible like Gran Turismo 4 Prologue (school mode, replays).
  • In First Preview the options are in different positions for the Lens options to the final release. In First Preview they are presented top to bottom (rough translation) as 'Image Quality', 'Focus', 'Screen Aspect', 'Shutter Sound' and 'Mode'. In the final release they are presented top to bottom as 'Mode', 'Shutter Sound', 'Focus', 'Memory Card PS2 Images' and 'USB Image Quality'.
  • The settings for the Lens options also differ. With Beginner (final) instead of Amateur (preview), aspect ratio being only part of the selectable element at the top of the photo preview then in two places (photo preview like the final game and the lens options), shutter sounds range from cameras, CANON as default option) in the final game there is A to S shutter sounds.
  • In First Preview only Light Intensity settings and Colour settings are offered. In the Final release Vignetting, Saturation, Brightness and Colour balance after options (adding 2 more and changing names/balancing options).
  • The High Chase camera view present in Gran Turismo 4 Prologue (replays and driving) is also available for driving and replay views in Gran Turismo 4 First Preview, it is not present in the final release.
