Gran Turismo 5 (also known as GT5) is the fifth mainline entry in the Gran Turismo series. Expanding on the Prologue version, which was released in 2007 and intended to give an impression of the final game, it is the first of the main numbered series to be on the PlayStation 3. The "Gullwing" Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG appears on the cover of all regional versions of the game.

The game featured multiple licensed collaborations with various motorsport series, such as NASCAR, the World Rally Championship, and Super GT. It also includes a tie-in with BBC's Top Gear, featuring the 'Top Gear' Test Track as a drivable circuit.

The total number of available cars grew to 1074 as of the release of the final car pack. New to the mainline games are supercar manufacturers Ferrari and Lamborghini, with the game even featuring Ferrari's Formula One cars from 2007 and 2010.

For the first time in the main series, GT5 features an online mode with a 16-player capability. The game features trophy support for the first time, and custom soundtracks. Mechanical damage makes a return from Gran Turismo 2, with visual damage appearing as well for the first time. Weather effects and variable time of day are also included on a number of tracks.

Gran Turismo 5

In an April 2008 interview, producer Kazunori Yamauchi revealed that 150 people had worked on Gran Turismo 5 for four years, with all of Polyphony Digital's 120 employees working on GT5, and the game costing 50 times more to develop ($60 million) than 1997's Gran Turismo. In a July 2008 interview with IGN, Yamauchi mentioned that Polyphony Digital was focused on updates for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue at the time and that Gran Turismo 5 would not be released until 2010, although in E3 2009 he revealed that he could release the game anytime he wants, he claims the team were working out all the bugs.

The game eventually released on November 24, 2010, where it was supported by numerous racing wheels, including Logitech wheels that were supported by previous Gran Turismo games on the PlayStation 2. The official wheel for the game is Logitech's Driving Force GT.

Save Locking[]

The following testing was done with the physical/Blu-ray versions of the game only.

Presumably as an anti-cheating/hacking mechanism/region locking (DRM or car duplication prevention), Gran Turismo 6 like GT PSP has limitations with save files by design (local account tested, both with the same name just different progress, on 2 different PS3s, not with a PS account synced, stock hard drive in both, may or may not effect PS3 device IDs or local user matching).

There are no prompts or checks (any user can use another's save file on GT5 Prologue and it will load correctly which may have led to the creation of these save file checks in GT PSP, GT5 and GT6 alongside server requirements for GT Sport/GT7 and patching GT Sport offline or future games with their services ending and offline accessibility of the game) on Gran Turismo 5 Prologue only in Gran Turismo 5, 6 and PSP versions (memory card swapping to another PSP so awkward for replacing PSPs) of the game.

A photo showing the game requesting deletion of the save file and to create a new one, restarting the game with new save data for the user and preventing them from using another user's (same console, same username different console, regardless of region).

GT5 and GT6 backup files can't be moved

A photo showing that Gran Turismo 5 and Gran Turismo 6 backup files can't be moved.

The regular save files can be moved to another storage device but only for backing up and cannot be loaded on anything but the original user's device and loaded by the original user's creator.

(the coloured tick box means it cannot be moved to another storage device which is why the backup files are greyed out, the uncoloured will change to a tick if selected for moving)

If the player looks at their backup file on their PS3 in the PS3 game saves they will notice the save files can be moved but the backup file can not.

So the user can copy them to a USB or an external hard drive for moving sake, say the player wanted to format the hard drive or something else and move it back. So they can back it up but not share it and move it to another PS3 due to preventing cheating, save file editing, sharing save files.

The way save file checks work is that if the game upon loading up detects the player's save file on the original user account it was created on it (loading with a different account on the same PS3 won't load the save and present the save deletion prompt or to quit back to the PS3 XMB) will load normally.

If it is loaded by another PS3 user (on the same PS3 or a different PS3 but same username characters used it may determine it as a different user) when loading the game, it will request save file deletion and to create a new save file forcing the player to restart their playthrough from the beginning.

The player has the option to exit the game using the PS3 menu and quitting the game to avoid deleting the save file.

Another possibility is if the same user tries on two PS3s and wants to move their save file from one PS3 to another PS3 (for the sake of the console dying/being replaced as a plausible scenario same as swapping PSPs and using the same memory game in a different model or another of the same model) (testing with 2 local accounts on two different PS3s with the same name and hoping it can pick up on the same characters/same intended user) it will do the same and request deletion of the save file.

No region testing has been done to see if the game detects a game from another region (likely as regardless of region it is still based on the original and another user (regardless of PS3) the original save file was created on and by the original user not being loaded by another user.

So it may not be a case of the hard drive/device ID just different consoles even if the same local user name it may determine it as a different user. Untested with PS3s and PSN accounts synced to both or cloud saves. A similar situation happens with GT PSP saving locking and moving memory cards to another PSP.

Server Shutdowns[]

GT5's My Home (which allowed for management of the Remote Racing feature) and Photo Stream web services were terminated on November 29, 2013, leaving space for the online features of Gran Turismo 6 following the launch date. Notifications for Seasonal Events also ended on December 25, 2013.

Gran Turismo TV closed on March 14, 2014 (with all video downloaded video content being available for one more year), followed by the remaining of the game's online services closing on May 30, 2014.[1] One update was released after the shutdown to address an issue where DLCs could not be installed after the servers had shut down.
