Gran Turismo Sophy is an AI opponent created in collaboration between Sony AI, Polyphony Digital, and Sony Interactive Entertainment. It is trained in three key areas: Car Control, Tactics, and Etiquette in order to create a realistic opponent.[1]

In the Spec II update,[2] Sophy 2.0 was added to the Quick Race feature exclusive on the PlayStation 5 version and is compatible with 340 vehicles. As of updates arriving in late 2024 into 2025, they often add Sophy compatibility to two new tracks (only one layout per track).

In Update 1.57, Sophy 2.1 was introduced.[3] This version of Sophy allows for custom Rival Cars in Custom Races on the GT Sophy-supported tracks and layouts.

Race Together[]

The first demonstration of GT Sophy took place in July and October 2021 (during the 2021 FIAGTC season) on Gran Turismo Sport. This was then followed by public, in-person exhibitions during the 2022 Gran Turismo World Series live events (although the demonstrations aired as tape delay rather than part of the broadcast). In the interim, technological details regarding GT Sophy was published in the February 10, 2022 issue of the science journal Nature.[4]

A PlayStation 5-exclusive event called Race Together, held between February 21, 2023 (the release of Update 1.29) until late March that year, somewhere prior to Update 1.31's release, served as a playable public demo for general players. Four races were available, located at Tsukuba Circuit, Alsace - Village, Trial Mountain Circuit, and Suzuka Circuit.

Circuit Availability[]

As of version 1.59, GT Sophy is available on 20 of the 39 circuits currently in GT7. All circuits currently only have one layout that is supported; as such the supported layout count is 20 of the 118 in-game layouts.

For tracks that support dynamic weather, GT Sophy races cannot pick the static time-of-day settings that are in wet conditions.

Availability of compatible cars for custom GT Sophy opponents also depends on the track. A car may be used in GT Sophy custom races on one track and incompatible on another.
