That's simple-just save the image, go to Special:Upload and click on "Browse". Unless you've saved a bazillion images since the one you want to upload, click on "Recent Documents", find it, click on it, hit "Save" at the bottom, and it's up!

History
This section is written as GTW prepares to celebrate its fourth (I think) birthday. You may be wondering, how exactly did this all come about? Well, here's an in-depth look at how the most-translated racing game wiki on Wikia came into being.

Phase 1: A new Packard Bell, an NES, AOL and the Web (1994-1998)
It all started in 1994, on a brand-new (at the time) Packard Bell computer, with a little program called AOL 1.5. It was my first experience with the Internet (or at least AOL's "walled garden" approach), and I was amazed at how awesomely cool it was, and the sheer amount of stuff I could find on it. I was content for a few years to just browse, until I finally decided that I wanted my own site.

The first racing game I ever played was Ivan Stewart's Baja 1000 on my cousin's NES. I could not get past the first level to save my life, but the uniqueness of the game (there weren't many racing games on the market at the moment) as well as my love for cars meant that unlike most NES players I actually spent more time playing that than I did Super Mario Bros.

Phase 2: The PS1, The original Spyro the Dragon, Turbo Prop Racing and GT1 (1998-1999)
I was happy to spend my time on the old Packard Bell playing Minesweeper and using the Internet for fun, until I saw a commercial for the PlayStation on TV. It looked so awesome I couldn't help myself, and I got one for Christmas '98.

My first game on it, as I recall, was the original Spyro the Dragon. I was so enamored by it I simply could not put it down, and even though I was stuck in the first couple of levels, I was hooked. Amazed as I was by Spyro's "speedway" levels, I wanted to see what a dedicated racing game would be like. So, I checked out a game called Turbo Prop Racing, and was again blown away by how much better TPR was than Baja 1000. It was this game that cemented my love for racing games.

A few months later, I was at a local Wal-Mart checking out games when I happened across GT1. The logo and the fact that it had a car under a cover on the front caught my attention, and I decided that I wanted to see what the car under the cover was (something no one has ever figured out, to my knowledge). Immediately, I was hooked, and played the game nonstop for months, although I was never able to finish above last. Still, I thought it was the second-coolest thing in the world (Next to the PlayStation, of course).

Phase 3: Wikia, Code Snippets Wiki, and the creation of GTW
Over the years, I had grown to enjoy reading about code (Perl, Python, BASIC, MediaWiki...), so when a user by the name of Sunderland06 asked me if I would like to co-found a wiki with him, I said yes. So we got some friends on board (whose usernames I can't rightly remember, besides Blow of Light), and we started the Code Snippets Wiki. We set up a deal where the first 10 users to edit the wiki would automatically become sysops...which turned out to be a terrible idea. I proved myself to be a horrible admin, sparked a conflict between other admins. I frequently made changes without consensus, which resulted in my being banned for six months. Besides, because of the fact that the first 10 editors were automatically admins, the wiki became vastly over-regulated, and the policy-space became cluttered with unnecessary and harsh regulations, with the result that CSW now sadly sits dormant deep within the bowels of Wikia's Lifestyle section, something I still regret.

It was during a six-month ban for accidentally changing the wiki's default skin that I grew frustrated and left the wiki. Soon, I decided, "what's the harm in founding a wiki about Gran Turismo?"

So I did.

The first human edit to GTW was me creating the Grand Valley Speedway page (a bot had set up the Main Page, as well as some other stuff). Soon after, users started coming in, and a little while later, we had 50 articles! Now, we've grown to NUMBEROFARTICLES articles, and we're only getting bigger.

Revision as of 16:01, 10 November 2011

Welcome to GTW!

Gran Turismo Wiki is a wiki site, much like Wikipedia, that aims to create a comprehensive encyclopedia of all facts and tidbits related to Gran Turismo.

Gran Turismo Wiki was founded in August 2008 by Gp75motorsports. Currently it has 4,593 articles with 207,962 edits between them.

This is a wiki site, which means anyone can edit. See that tab on the top of the page? Just click that and follow these steps to edit.

Edit? But I wanna create a whole new article!

That's also simple. There's a link in the toolbar to the left hand side of the page that says "Create a page!" Open this link in a new window, click that, and follow the steps!

Darn! I need an image that doesn't exist here yet. Help!

That's simple-just save the image, go to Special:Upload and click on "Browse". Unless you've saved a bazillion images since the one you want to upload, click on "Recent Documents", find it, click on it, hit "Save" at the bottom, and it's up!
