GM Holden Ltd., or simply Holden, was an automaker that operated in Australia, based in Port Melbourne, Victoria. The company was founded in 1856 as a saddlery business, but later moved into the automotive field, becoming a subsidiary of the U.S.-based General Motors (GM) in 1931. The first model to be sold as a Holden was the 48-215 of 1948. Holden has taken charge of vehicle operations for GM in Australasia and, on behalf of GM, holds partial ownership of GM Daewoo in South Korea. The automaker commonly badge engineers vehicles for many other automakers, which include Toyota, Chevrolet, Nissan and Vauxhall. Although Holden's involvement in exports has fluctuated since the 1950s, the declining sales of large cars in Australia has led the company to look to international markets to increase profitability. The Kingswood, one of Holden's best known cars, was launched in 1968.
Holden's flagship model, the Australian-made Commodore, was Australia's best selling car until 2011, when the BL-series Mazda3 outsold it. In 2000-2001, Holden began work on the hand-made Efijy concept car, completed in 2005. It was based on the floor pan of the Chevrolet Corvette, and had front end styling based on the famous FJ model from 1953-56, and is powered by a supercharged version of the Corvette's 6.0-litre V8 engine. When taken to the United States, Efijy won every single hotrod contest it was entered in. On the 11 December 2013 Holden announced that local production of their cars would end in late 2017. They also announced in early 2015 that they will launch 24 new models and 36 new drivetrains by 2020, but by that year General Motors disbanded the marque as part of GM's withdrawal from right-hand drive markets.
Holden's first appearance in the Gran Turismo series is in Gran Turismo 4.
