Description[]
The CB400SS was a mid-level sports single based on the CL400 Street Scrambler. To the CL400's semi-double-cradle frame, Honda added larger wheels: 19-inch in the front and 18-inch in the back. Honda took the air-cooled engine of the XR400R offroad bike and modified it for racing. The "SS" in the bike's name stands for "Standard Single" , in reference to the machine's traditional 1960s British styling.
The engine's radial four-valve combustion chamber is a unique Honda design in which the four valves are positioned radially around the combustion chamber head for improved efficiency in intake, combustion, and exhaust. The dry-sump lubrication system makes for lower friction loss and better oil cooling. The single-muffler, dual-exhaust system provides the same excellent low-to midrange pickup as the XR400R, along with flexible torque properties and a crisp single-cylinder sound.
The engine balancers enhance comfort by reducing the vibration common to single-cylinder bike, and also reduce frame stress, allowing for a lighter frame.
The sporty single-cylinder experience begins as soon as the rider mounts the slim CB400SS, which weighs only 320 lbs dry. The kick starter's automatic compression release makes starting easier. A minor redesign for the 2004 models added a reduction gear to the starter for even easier starting.
The exciting engine revving and pulsing of the midlevel, single-cylinder CB400SS make even stop-and-go riding fun. In slow riding with early up-shifting, the machine delivers excellent power. On winding roads, it also comes up with the quickness and handling to negotiate the turns well.
