Description[]
The CB400-Four was released in December 1974 in the midst of the "café racer" boom that was then sweeping the entire world. Its defining characteristics were those that typified the café racer: sporty looks with stylised exhaust pipes and muffler. Even after production was discontinued only 2 years after its dazzling debut, the popularity of the CB400-Four continued undiminished in Japan—so much so that used bikes sold at a premium. The Four still has plenty of diehard fans today.
The CB400-Four was based on the CB350-Four, a traditionally styled bike with a single-overhead-cam, air-cooled, two-valve, four-cylinder engine and four mufflers. For the CB400 however, Honda widened the bore 4 mm to boost displacement to 408 cc and added a 6-speed transmission. The goal was to create a machine that was not only sporty looking but had the best performance potential of any mid-level bike of its day.
In the following year, Japan introduced a three-tiered motorcycle licence system, with separate licenses for small bikes up to 125 cc, medium-sized bikes up to 400 cc, and finally one with no displacement limit. So in March 1976, Honda responded by releasing a second version of the CB400-Four, with a smaller 398-cc engine (just under the 400-cc limit for a mid-sized bike licence) but generating only 1 horsepower less. Like the 408-cc model, the 398-cc CB400-Four was available in two types: Type I, with low handlebars, and Type II, with raised handlebars better suited to the typical rider. The 398-cc models differed from the larger CB400-Four in some ways, most obviously in its black side covers. As the only 4-cylinder machines in the 400-cc class of motorcycles, both models attracted plenty of attention.
The low handlebars, long fuel tank, and rearset footpegs made for a racing-style riding position. Beyond 6,000 r.p.m., the exceptionally quiet engine revved smoothly but sharply, for brisk acceleration. With these properties, along with the bike's natural, responsive handling, its no wonder the CB400-Four won over so many motorcycle riders. Even today, the bike's timeless good looks and thrilling ride make it an attractive machine indeed.
