Description[]
One of the bikes rolling into Honda dealerships in 1979 was the CB750F, the first Honda powered by an air-cooled dual-overhead-cam 4-valve, 4-cylinder engine. Like the simultaneously developed CB900F, the elegantly European Stream-Integrated Design was a smash hit not only in Japan but also in Europe—the model's primary target market—and North America. Because of Japan's stringent emissions standards, only the CB750F was released there, initially under the name CB750FZ. In 1980, this bike received changes to the brake pads, headlights, and paint job and was renamed the CB750FA.
Released in 1981 was the significantly redesigned CB750FB, with improved power, torque, and with more miles to the gallon A semi-air-assisted fork enhances both riding comfort and sports handling, while two-pot caliper brakes in the front provide extra braking power. The previous model's six-position adjustable-damper rear suspension was upgraded with 30-position FVQ dampers. Storage space in the rear cowl was expanded for greater utility. Stylistic changes include aluminium Comstar rims with black spokes.
A limited-edition run of 150 CB750 Bol D'Or IIs based on the FB was produced. The Bol D'Or II was available with an optional CB900F2 fairing, but because of compliance issues involving the fairing, bikes equipped with it had to be approved individually before being turned over to the buyer.
The performance differences between the FA and FB were clear. The FB felt more powerful and had better response, particularly in the mid to high range. The two-pot caliper brakes resolved previous models' problems with inadequate braking force, thus ensuring safe, reliable deceleration and stopping. With the solid potential to match its sporty good looks, this CB750F is still just as appealing a bike as when it was first released.
