Description[]
The CBR600RR is a mid-level Honda sports model that dominates the production "super sports" races in its class. This category was once ruled by the CBR600F, but in response to competitors who began gaining on Honda in the late 1990s, Honda developed the RR for better performance on the track. Debuted in 2003, the RR is built on a chassis that's practically a replica of the RC211V, the MotoGP machine developed in parallel with the CBR600RR beginning in the spring of 2000.
The frame is not only similar in shape to the 211V's but also features the Unit Pro-Link rear suspension system, in which the upper shock mount attaches to the swing arm structure instead of the frame. The elongated, compact fuel tank extends into the freed-up space under the seat, making it easier for the rider to slide forward and back.
The more centralised mass enables almost 250-cc-class handling and better control by allowing the rider greater freedom in shifting his weight. The riding position feels somewhat high, but then that's part of this machine's charm.
The specially-designed engine has the same bore that's and stroke as the 600F but is much more compact. The 2005 model was improved for better low- to midrange performance and better rear-wheel grip. A valley in the torque curve was eliminated, and with improved high-speed performance, the rider can rev the machine into the red zone—starting at 15,000 r.p.m.—in an instant. In absolute terms, however, this machine's performance is somewhat benign for a high-performance model, and it is easy enough to handle for anyone who wants to experience the essence of the 211V, even on winding roads.
The model made for the Japanese market generates 69 hp—considerably less than the export model's 117 hp—but still has sharp acceleration from the midrange to the high rpms. For riders who just have to experience the export model's power, a full-spec upgrade kit is available.
