Description[]
Released with much fanfare in 1992, the CBR900RR FireBlade broke with the then-dominant popularity of big-engined, high-power motorcycles. Under the guiding concept of total control, Honda built the CBR900RR as light as possible and with it ushered in the era of supersports bikes. In fact, the 1,000-cc hyper supersport bikes that are so popular today might not exist now had not the FireBlade first blazed the trail.
Honda subsequently redesigned the FireBlade every other model year. A major overhaul in 2000 introduced a semi-pivotless frame—in which the swing arm pivots are connected to the crank case and the frame—as well as a more compact engine and the addition of a fuel injection system.
In 2002 came the 6th generation, dubbed the CBR954, which had a 1mm larger bore size than the 2000 model and a displacement boosted from 929 cc to 954 cc (hence the name). With the CBR models having crossed the line into superbike territory in 2004 with the 1000RR, the CBR954 can be thought of as the last model to stay true to the original FireBlade concept.
The 954 not only has greater displacement than the first FireBlade. Its shorter fuel tank makes room for a modern riding position that is compact and aggressive. The engine bares its fangs and really roars to life from 10,500 r.p.m. up until 11,250 r.p.m., where power peaks. A rider accelerating out of a turn practically has to fight to keep the front wheel down. The 954 redlines at 11,600 r.p.m.—200 r.p.m. higher than its predecessor. Response is exquisite in every stage of a turn, from entry to exit.
At the same time, the 954 is as easy to handle on city streets as a 600-class bike, demonstrating that this is truly a machine that combines practicality with out-of-this-world performance.
