Description[]

Dirt-track racing became popular in North America in the 1960's and even produced such world-class grand prix riders as Freddie Spencer and Eddie Lawson. In 1986, Honda released in Japan a 250-cc-class bike that faithfully recreated the dirt racers of that era, the FTR250.

In 2001 Honda built an updated FTR in response to the renewed popularity in Japan of dirt-track motorsports. This FTR combined the XR200's semi-double-cradle frame with the SL230's engine. The 19-inch front wheel size was reduced to 18 inches, matching the rear wheel, but other than that, the new FTR was identical in appearance to its 1986 predecessor in nearly every way, including the fuel tank and side covers that resembled number plates. Flashy with its white, red, and blue tricolour paint job, this bike could tear up a dirt track and turn heads on the street.

The air-cooled, four-stroke, overhead-cam 223-cc single-cylinder engine was designed for flexible power properties for dirt-track and street driving. Dirt racing-proven Dunlop K180 tyres were mounted in the front and rear. The front rim was aluminium for its light weight, while the rear rim was made of steel for better lateral stability. The ultra-wide 32-inch handlebars topped off the bike's authentic feel. To allow buyers greater room for personalisation, Honda offered the FTR in seventy different colour combinations. For the 2003 model year, the tricolour model was joined by variations with more of an urban look in the handlebars, instruments, headlights, mirrors, and side covers.

The FTR has to be ridden to appreciate its true uniqueness—the low, slim seat, tenacious power that's evident even when the bike is idling, and speed combined with exceptional handling. The FTR is a unique bike with both performance for the dirt track and ease of handling and pure fun on the street.
